T43... Can it be that they have fixed the famous problems
I just received my T43 (not 'P') 2 days ago and i have been using it a lot since. I have installed vs.net + msdn + sql (client tools) + office 2003 + street and trips + Java JDK 1.5 all under the battery and i have to say... i almost didn't hear the fan kick in.... Of course i felt the left palm rest getting a bit warm (probably due hdd activity) not actually hot and the bottom of the laptop was not hot to the point where you can,t have it on your lap. The next day i used it under ac for 4 hours....no fan problems, and later that day it was on battery for almost 3 hours and again no fan or noise problems! Occasionaly the fan started when cpu was under heavy use but didn't stayed on for long.

I doubt anything has changed. I thought my t43 was quiet when I got it, and in most situations the fan noise isn't conspicuous. However, after using it extensively in the library, I've found the fan noise to be annoying and definitely present. I hope they actually did change it, but I'd wait before saying everything is fixed.

Can you define 'extensively' (how long were you using it, what power scheme...)Jmmmmm wrote:...after using it extensively in the library, I've found the fan noise to be annoying and definitely present...
I experienced a long BackOrder before getting mine... Date on the little sticker is (2005/10) but Lenovo told me this is the order date....Actual build date is 2005/11

Also if your model was either a pre Aug/Sept model, it might be noisy. It seems Lenovo has done something. I was expecting a noisy laptop after hearing all the rants on this forum. But I was surprised
T43 2668AJU: 2Ghz/1.25GB/SXGA+/7K60HDD/9cell/FPR
T42 2378R1U: 1.6Ghz/1.25GB/XGA/40GBHDD/6cell/FPR
Prev: 600E, X22
T42 2378R1U: 1.6Ghz/1.25GB/XGA/40GBHDD/6cell/FPR

Mine's from May I think... it's fine with me. I think it's all relative about the fan noise. I mean, just enjoy the darn laptop for what it is! Mine consistently runs at 44-48, sometimes peaking at around low 50 using CHC. And it gets warm, on the bottom.
But it's a good laptop and I've come to love it. 2687D3U... T43.

Lenovo Singapore on the Windows sticker. Everywhere else, it said IBM.
This is an 05/11 build. 2668J2U.
Also, it was loud at bootup, but quickly fell silent(or at least to a point where I couldn't hear it over my dad's Inspiron 1100!). I plan on using this at the lowest power setting 99% of the time anyway, so that's a good thing.

Thanks Man.....Nothing against Lenovo- Its just the end of an ERA and I still want mine to represent Big Blue!

That is the same Fan behavior I have seen on most T43 Laptops now and I am guessing that the ones I saw are of different build dates both before and after August.

It's too bad that the new IBM won't ship out replacement CDs like they did back when I bought my T41s and T42P.
Oh well...I'll Ghost it tonight and start my new install. So far, all the bad things I'd heard haven't reared their ugly head...but I've only used it for 20 minutes so far...and half that time was spent upside down getting 2gigs of RAM put in!

new thinkpad owner here...
I haven't browsed the forums extensively so not exactly sure how to tell if I have a "fan problem", but judging by the posts in this thread alone they seem quite serious.
I had absolutely no idea that this problem even existed (shoulda done more research
)
According to the sticker on the box, mfg date is 2005-9-24.
Machine type is 2668AH3.

Well, I can only hear the fan if my workspace is completely silent... so it's not a big bother to me.
Coming from desktop computers (I have two Shuttle XPC's, a loud SN45G and a SN25P) this T43 is WHISPER QUIET!
I guess a lot of ThinkPad owners wouldn't even know this was a "problem", because what they don't know can't bother them...

I would have to agree; even in the Library, which is *very* quiet, I can't even hear the Fan in my T43. Especially for the First Hour or so when I am on Battery; at times, the Hard Drive is louder.

Sorry I do not see it solved - at least not for my model.
I got my T43 last Monday (Modell 2668F3G). On the box it said manufactured 2005-10-23.
I had a week now to play around with it and install all updates - including bios.
Besides some minor troubles (WLAN has problems, strange behavior of programs after using ThinkVantage SoftwareInstaller/updater) the fan is by far what annoyes me most.
It is (almost) constantly running at a quite auditible level. CPU-Temperature is around 42 to 49° Celcius in normal operation (according to HCC) . The fan essentially keeps the same speed even if I have full load and like 66°. Occasionally it might speed up in a short burst.
Sofar, I found only one way to "switch it off":
Go outside on the balcony - currently 12°. Doing almost nothing in battery mode (everything set to low engery consumption) the temperature went down to 38/39. But it also took switching of the WLAN to make the fan finally stop. Back in it rather quickly kicked in again.
To me it looks like my fan doesn't really care that much for CPU temperature. Whatever else it might care for.
