2405FPW - Floating - Rolling feature on T42

#1 Post by tallassazn » Fri Nov 11, 2005 10:06 am

I have a IBM T42 laptop running a Mobile Radeon at 1920x1200.
The 2405fpw is used as a second monitor in this setup.

Should this monitor have a scrolling/rolling/floating feature effect? Essentially, the canvas of the monitor is larger than the actual monitor screen so when you move the mouse from one corner to another corner of the screen, the screen real estate floats until it reaches the other corner.

How can I turn this feature off so when I maximize a window, it will take up the whole screen real estate and not have part of the window off the monitor?

Is this an issue with the video card or a feature? Am I not achieving full 1920x1200 even though the video setting state so?

Thanks in advance.

You may not have enough video memory to support the maximum resolution. Which model thinkpad do you have?

I had a T40 with 32MB RAM so the T42 should have more than enough RAM and power to run at 1920 x 1200

I also run 1920x1200 displays on My T42p, so it is possible. I'm assuming that you have the current video drivers? If not, go get them.

Try uninstalling the Dell 2405fpw driver and select the resolution from the generic LCD settings. I had problems with Dell's 2405 driver on the Thinkpad.

I have a T42 with a Mobility Raedon 7500 video card.

Product: ThinkPad T42 2374-4WU [change]
Operating system: Windows XP [change]

Original description: P M 735, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

Driver Date: 5/25/2005
Driver Version: 6.14.10.6546

ATI support told me its a virtual screen issue and it is graphic card related but because IBM OEMs the driver and configures it, ATI is unable to assist with the problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Not meaning to ask a stupid question, but you did actually setup the external monitor screen resolution to 1900x1200, didn't you? It sounds like you have it set to something lower, and the desktop area set to 1900x1200.

I had the monitor set to 1920x1200 via Display Properties in the Control Panel. According to ATI, the virtual screen problem, where the screen real estate is larger than the monitor screen, is an issue with an underpowered video card.

That being said, it seems as if other folks have gotten the T42 to work with the 2405fpw so I want to see if someone can provide me the exact steps they used to obtain this.

I too am using the (2405fpw) as an extention monitor for my thinkpad. And am also experiencing the image or (page) does not fill the total area (24") that this display is capable of.

I have ajusted the setings on the 2405fpw to fill the (24") area...but the image or (page) appears streached out. Not good when editing photos.

Been on the manufacture web-sight and they say the graphics card needed to support this new (wide-screen) format.

ATI Mo/Ra 9700
ATI Mo/Ra 9800
Intel GMA 900

Also been in contact with IBM support, and they claim the graphics are embeded in the system.. and can't be replaced or upgraded.!!

Question? maybe ATI has an upgrade you can plug into the PC card slot. Or maybe there is a way to put the 9800 graphics into my thinkpad?

I am hopefull we can resolve this issue.

There are two ways to get this to work:

1. Get a docking station (Dock II) and put a graphics card in it. Make sure the graphics card uses a PCI interface and supports DVI. I'm using this card in my Dock II and running a 2405FPW right now: http://tinyurl.com/d4axa - It has an extra VGA port so you can run two sceens off most of these cards. Here's a list of other cards that should work and fit in the Dock II: http://tinyurl.com/cd4kk. It would probably be best is to picked a card without a fan.

2. Get a PCMCIA based video card. www.villagetronic.com sells them, and there are others. They work okay, but certainly not as fast as the Docking station solution.

There are also USB 2.0-based video adapters, but I've never used them.

I wouldn't even try the USB-video-adapters. The bandwidth is not nearly enough to run a high resolution that the 2405FPW requires.

Use Omega driver

Try using the Omega drive. I have a T42 with the same video card as yours (Radeon 7500). I have the Omega driver installed and it gives me a 1920x1200 option.
