Sleeve for 15" T42 - Hedgren ?

#1 Post by Troels » Fri Nov 11, 2005 7:22 pm

Hi,

I'm in need for a laptop sleeve for my 15" T42. I do know that searching reveals a lot of threads on this subject, but i have some further questions.

It seems that everybody like the SFBags Waterfield sleevecase, but it is considerably more than what i want to pay! For me it would mean $55 (minimum) + $15 + 25% of package value AND shipping + 10$ VAT/toll duty carge, total: at least $98!

Also the PowerSleeve is too large (thickness).

I'm looking into alternatives, primarily available in Europe.
One thing that caught my attention was the
Shinza ZeroShock, but i'm not sure how good it is after all, and if the zipper leaves scuffs on the edges of the laptop.... - it does seem to have very rounded edges.
Another bag was the Hedgren Utopia Professional Inch M sleeve (see picture: http://www.mobileworld.fi/samsonite/Hed ... 00x500.jpg ).

I would really like to know more about that Hedgren, but i can't find any info or reviews mentioning it, and can't find it for sale here (Denmark) - does anyone have any experience with it ?

Any inputs ? - or other suggestions on cheap-ish sleeves, max. $45, available in Europe, that offer protection, but still only a "sleeve", e.g. no handle, tight fit.

Thanks in advance

I have the zeroshock for both of my T's. You don't have to worry about the zipper, because there's an edged lip on each side of the clamshell that prevents the zipper from touching the edge of the laptop.

Some have complained that the inner lining of the zeroshock is not soft enough, and can scuff the lcd cover of the thinkpad. I haven't had any problems with that, but you probably want to keep it in mind.

Size is the big issue for the Zeroshock. The 15" Large version is a bit too big - not very snug for a 15" thinkpad. The 15" medium is a very snug fit - a bit too snug for me - and I can't get it to close with the 9 cell battery installed.

I do like it a lot though. It's an unparalleled shock absorber, and with it, I'm not afraid of engaging in a full sprint even with a backpack full of books.

Thanks! I guess the zeroshock won't work, since the T42 already fits the bag well, i.e. there is not space for a sleeve that doesn't fit the T42 snuggly. :(

Does anyone know of more "velcro-locked" sleeves like the Hedgren above (but not the Waterfields one), or know more about the Hedgren ?

I did the same thing as you....I looked all around for the perfect sleeve that did not cost $100+. In the end I gave up and ordered a Waterfield sleeve....against my better judgement and contrary to my bank account balance. To make a long story short....the Waterfield bag was worth EVERY penny. It really is a top notch bag that fits my 15" T42p w/ 9-cell battery like a glove. Trust me, it is worth the extra $40 or $50.

Just my 2 cents.

Troels:

I have a Tom Binh Brain Cell. (http://www.tombihn.com). It may not be waht you are looking for, since it is a little bulky, but provides wonderful protection, and is cheaper than the Waterfield sleeve. I am a big fan of the company, they make great bags and give good service.

The Tom Binh looks highly durable, good bag/sleeve it seems

I forgot to update this thread: I bought a Zeroshock 15" since they didn't have a 14" edition available. Now another problem: It hardly fits into my backpack, imo the zeroshock is too large for most backpacks!

No damages have happened yet, but their zeroshock-tech is purely theoretical. You CANNOT take a boxing glove to the bag and expect the bag to save the laptop in any way, i don't think it is much better than neoprene with high density foam.

Thanks :)

I have been a big promoter of Tom Bihn here for a number of years now. I have many of their bags, including several Brain Cells for the different ThinkPads that I own or have owned. I'm not aware of any other bag company that offers equal quality and service. The Brain Cell is not a tight fitting neoprene sleeve, but it has extremely good protection. Make sure to consider getting a shoulder strap to go with the Brain Cell.
