There has been some local news in the Raleigh area picking up on the Lenovo expansion in the Research Triangle Park, they are pronouncing it Len O Vo pretty much like it's spelled.

It definitely should be pronounced like "LeNouveau", because it is new (in french it means "The New"), and my spell checker automatically corrects Lenovo to LeNouveau as well, so it must be right :)

I called Lenovo recently and they pronounce it "len-OH-vo" so I guess that's the official pronunciation. I had been pronouncing it "LENovo," which is wrong.

However, what I want to know is, what does Lenovo mean? Is it a family name in China? Or does it have a meaning?

Subaru, for example, is Japanese for The Pleiades, which is why you see that constellation of stars (as seen by someone with not so great eyesight as they only have six of the usual seven stars in there) on the car logo. And no, Subaru is not "you are a bus" spelled backward.

So does Lenovo have a similar meaning or is it just a family name like Dell?

From the "About Lenovo" page of the Lenovo website:

By 1994, Legend was trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange; four years later, it produced its one-millionth personal computer. In 2003, Legend changed its brand name to Lenovo, taking the “Le” from Legend, a nod to its heritage, and adding “novo,” the Latin word for “new,” to reflect the spirit of innovation at the core of the company. The company name changed from Legend to Lenovo a year later.

And btw, I pronounce it "le-NO-vo" and radio/TV advertisements here in Australia tend to have it pronounced that way.

Len-oval? Like they stuck an L at the end of it?

Well, my computer is called "Fortitudo", but my girlfriend can't seem to pronounce it right, so she sticks and "r" at the end and callse it "Fortitudor".

What is it with native English speakers and pronunciations?
