X20 series, in my opinion, is the closest, though all of them are very good. I have the X32 and used to own an X21, and the X21 was more "600esque" in its keyboard. The current X series keyboards are excellent, and feel much like those of a T40-series.

My X41T keyboard is far superior to the T42 keyboard (which has the Thai better version than Chinese). The X41T keyboard is truly wonderful...best I've ever used.

Indeed...
(note, I sold my X40 over 6 months ago)
My X40 had the best keyboard I ever had.
Afther that I Bought an T42, but I really could notice a diference, now I got an X31 and still I look back at those times that I used an X40...
No.. the X4x Series has te best keyboard on the market.
But I must admit that the T42 Thai, and X31 keyboards do feel nice to.
Much better then some other tp keyboards (like the X21 imho)

I like loud keyboards. Loved the old clackety IBM desktop keyboards of the 80s that felt like a Selectric.

Loud is the only way I'll have my keyboard when I'm at home but for my laptop I do prefer quiet because the last thing I want when I'm in class hammering away at the last moment the last few words of a big essay is for everyone to be starting right at me because my keyobard is making so much noise. As far as desktops go, I've been spoiled by my Model M but as far as laptops go, having enough noise to let me know I hit the key and not anything more is just fine.
ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult

Note that there were two keyboards for the X20/21.
Myself, I love the keyboard I've got. It's got a feel that reminds me of that of a Model M, yet is quiet. No, it's no Model M. A little more mushy, a little more resistance (a less "clean" feel to the key action).
I've never used the other X series models, nor have I used a 600X, though.
I have used an R50e, though, and the keyboard was slightly inferior to that of this X21.

RS_003 - was the keyboard on your X40 made by Chicony or NMB? if you don't remember, do you have the serial number of that machine?RS_003 wrote:Indeed...

I am considering the X32 and X41, and the main issue is which machine has the superior keyboard. some say the X4x, while others say the X3x.
The Thinkpad keyboards all in all over the time from model to model somehow differed slightly, see:

...where the oldest Thinkpads of course had -no need to ask- the best of them.
However, even the nowadays Thinkpad keyboards are mostly superior to every other notebook manufactors keyboards. - BTW, personally I also like these external Thinkpad like keyboards...

...which are sturdy and of high build quality too.
