Favorite (non-ThinkPad) Gadget

It's rather clear that most folks here have ThinkPads but I was wondering what other toys everyone here has that they use on a regular basis.

For me, my favorite toys would be:

My '98 Volvo S70 with high pressur turbo. I enjoy tinkering with it and the mods I've done to it including my iPod running through and being contolled by the Volvo's head unit.

Starting with most important:

1. Samsung x475 mobile phone - a basic compact mobile; doesn't play music, no camera, no fluff. It is small and it works.

2. Cannon PowerShot A520 - good for taking photographic records of places I've been and events. It's an entry level model that offers a fair bit more control than your average point-and-shoot.

3. iPod 20GB - This is more for fun than anything else. I wouldn't miss it as much as the other two if I didn't have it, but then again, I didn't pay any $ for it (and no, I did NOT get it from a free ipod scam!).

I don't have any other gadgets.

1. Sony NW-HD5 (20GB) HDD Walkman - audiophile sound quality, especially when matched with...

2. Shure E4C canalphones - despite what you might read, these are not necessarily harmful to your ears because there is the urge to actually turn the music down, not up, because they are noise isolating. On planes, beats any noise cancelling headphone I've ever tried.

3. Canon Ixus 55 - just picked it up actually. Not a bad little camera. We didn't really need 5 megapixels, though.

4. Sanyo ICR-B175NZ recorder - this thing records in stereo and directly encodes to mp3. I use it to record my lectures so students can have an mp3 available right after class. Also use a Kensington wireless presenter (not a mouse) to advance Powerpoint slides (forget the model number - picked it up in the UK at a PC World).

5. Sound Professionals binaural microphones (http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-b ... m/SP-TFB-2) - these are neat: the full binaural soundstage when recording is really something else (I use an old Minidisc recorder to record).

I'm with you on wanting a basic compact mobile; doesn't play music, no camera, no fluff. But I must say that my Samsung X427m is the worst cell phone I have ever owned. I've had a Nokia and a Motorola in the past, and I liked both of these phones much better. Basically I want a high-quality compact phone without a camera. I tend to favor the flip models.

My complaints with my Samsung are:
1. Display goes completely blank after some seconds. The only way I can tell if my phone is working is by a flashing LED, which I find annoying. My other 2 phones had LCD displays that were visible all the time.
2. Display almost impossible to read outdoors, where the light is bright.
3. Too many key presses needed when using the menu system (as compared to my other phones). For example, it takes 4 or more key presses to dial a number from the internal phonebook.
4. Earphone volume cannot be adjusted loud enough for noisy environments.
5. Ring volume could be louder for when you need to hear the ring in a noisy environment.

Odd. I have a Samsung x105 and that phone is one of the best I've ever owned. There are a feww things that annoy me about it such as the fact that to enter silent mode the phone actually makes noise but other than that and a few smaller non-issues, the phone is great. I've never had reception trouble on it, the battery lasts longer than that of any phone I've had before and despite the number of times I've dropped this phone on accident, it only has some scuffs and scratches to show for it.

My previous phone, a Kyocera K7 had keys falling outof the keypad just from normal use and that was my warranty replacement. The K7 before that had the display quit showing an image after I accidently bumped into a plastic chair with it in my pocket.

Verizon Broadband Access - having high-speed internet access anytime, anywhere is the coolest. I remember years ago computer illiterates would always ask if I was on the internet - they saw a computer, and that always meant that "internet thingy" to them. Now, the answer is "Yep, I sure am." A bit expensive, but totally worth it. I'm really looking forward to the day when it's dirt cheap and plentiful, like DSL has become.

As for favorite gadgets:

1. HP41C calculator. Bought in 1979, still used every day.

Netgear’s WGR101 Wireless Travel Router: make a hotspot where there was none.

Beautiful. Sweet.

It clones MAC addresses which is great for places where network connectivity is filtered to registered MAC addresses only. It can also do your authentication to over a bunch of protocols. You can also filter down and allow access to only one machine by MAC or IP to make your own personal hotspot.

I think that the only thing I do not like about it is the fact that it does not offer a switched port ( to allow for quick pulls from a PC without wireless to a wireless laptop )
