Chicony vs Thai
Chicony vs Thai
My machine came with the Chicony and I was happy with it, but then I came here and saw the overwhelming preference for the Thai model. So, gullible fool that I am, I ordered the Thai. Short story shorter, I really prefer the Chinese model. It feels tighter, more responsive, and it registers every strike with a satisfying click instead of the blunted report given by the Thai. Did I get a bum Thai, an exemplary Chicony, or are my tastes just too plebeian? Frivolous as this distinction is, I'm still sort of curious.

IBM did change their policy recently. A couple of weeks after receiving my replacement keyboards, I got prepaid return labels in the mail. As it should be, really.defjux wrote:Why swap? IBM will send you as many keyboards as you want.
As to your preference in keyboards, go with what you like. Some people are very picky about their keyboards, but I imagine they're a tiny, tiny minority even among the proselytes here.
I've quantitatively proven to myself that I type faster and more accurately with the Thai keyboard, but I've also paid up to $100 for used, 15-year old Omnikey Ultras, so you can decide for yourself how much crazy to apply in skewing your perception of my views.

Keyboards used to be "free" replacements, back in 04 and the first half of 05 when I previously had them replaced. Recovery discs used to be free, but I hear they now charge for them. Batteries especially have always been return items (also, I think they're on a separate 1-year warranty). I have the full three-year on-site warranty with Thinkpad Protection Program (accidental damage).defjux wrote:Really? They've sent me another battery, keyboard and recovery discs without requesting a thing. Maybe you have a different warranty.
Unless you are volume/corporate customer, I think you have have gotten lucky with the battery. When were your replacement parts ordered?

I got two Thai keyboards at no charge, and without a need to return the old ones during this last September. I only got two because the first came broken (the u key mechanism was totally broken!), but the second one I'm typing on as we speak. I had trouble with the left shift on my original alps, though, so that's why I went to the replacement.
Anyways, the same problem seems to be hanging around, which I don't get on other keyboards. So maybe it's my typing or the keyboard connection interface or something silly. I'm not worrying.

Ugh, well I'm not going to get into "fraud," but from the general consensus on this board since the last few months, it sounds like you got lucky with the free peripherals. DEFINITELY so with the battery - My battery replacements have all come with packing labels included (as have the optical drive replacements), as would be much too easy to do what you just described - call and ask for a replacement when nothing is broken and your real intent is to keep it around as a spare (or sell for profit or whatever).defjux wrote:Two months ago, when I first got it. I figured I'd need extras of all those things, and I remembered the great support I got from when I had my T30.
Frankly, I'm surprised they never previously asked for keyboards back! What warranty do you have, and do you route your requests through Thinkpad Support in Atlanta, or a different channel?

Interesting. Well, I'm jealous of your luck!defjux wrote:I have the basic three-year warranty that came with the machine, and as far as I know all returns are routed through Atlanta (it's where they route all my service calls, anyway).
