Dead pixel broke my heart on a new expected X40
I've paid $1600 and waited 18 days for my X40 to arrive from China.
I received it today. The problem is that it came with 2 meshed or 1 red bright dead pixel located 1 inch above the far left bottom of the LCD.
I'm so dissappointed and very annoyed as I expected IBM Thinkpads to be perfect (out of luck). This pixel policy is so old, by now technology would be expected to create zero defects.
I've bought the X40 to replace my 240x only because dead pixels appeared on a 5 inch line on top. It's cheaper for me to get a new LCD for my 240x.
My x40 is going back for a replacement if possible, if not then refund.
Questions:
1) Am I going to have to wait another 18 days to get a replacement?
2) How do you minimize the constant screaming internal fan to the left?
3) How do you create a recovery CD\backup of the OS and Thinkpad Apps in case I install a new hard drive for my X40?

Feb 2008=Thinkpad X61s; 2x faster than X40 but not as asthetic.
Dec 2005=Thinkpad X40; perfect, but bigger than 240x.
Jan 2005=Thinkpad 240x; used; fast but dead pixels doomed it.
2003=Thinkpad 240; used,

I got my t43p two months ago with one stuck pixel (blue). Tried with rubbing and with flashing program for over 6 hours. You might try this as well, maybe it will work for you.

First , can you guys answer my questions # 2 and #3.
I've tried rubbing slightly above the pixel spot a few times. It didn't work.
I do recall that my old used laptop had one dead pixel after rebooting a few times and it went away. I'll try the video flashing after I get dead pixel after months of using a perfectly new X40.
Anyways, thank's for the suggestion. IBM told me that getting a dead pixel is just for unlucky people in the minority .Fine. I'll see after my replacement comes in 3 weeks.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to go back to the coffee shop and workplace cafeteria with my new and perfect Thinkpad X40. I'm kind of embarrass to be using a great 240x but that has a long line across the screen.

Hi guys!
I just want to give you some other informations about "dead" pixels:
Not all dead pixels are dead pixels - some of them are just dirt inside the screen, but they look very similar to dead pixels!
It happened to my A31p and also to my friend's machine:
After 2 years of use - some day I recognized a tiny bug inside my screen (no joke!). The first day I mentioned it, it was turning around and moving (still living!). After a couple of days and some "screen-massage" it was still there so I called the hotline and the display was replaced under warranty. Unfortunately I received a used/refurbished/whatever display with 2 bad pixels, uneven brightness and an vertical line like an material-edge in the right half of the display - but that is another story!
My friend is a smoker and he has a lot of dust/ash inside his display!
Conclusion: displays are not sealed!!!
Dirt can get BETWEEN the TFT and the backround lighting and it looks very similar to dead (black) pixels. My assumption: these "dead" pixels may be revitalized by a massage of the screen - therefore it's not a rumor.
You can evaluate a bad pixel with special programms like tft-test.exe. Here you can also differentiate between dead pixels and dead sub-pixels which are on/off only at a certain color. An allways white pixel is a bad pixel for sure! Dirt inside the screen looks like a black pixel, but it isnt - if you move the mouse over it you can see the dirt located at a level BEHIND the mouse - this is dirt!
The service-people told me that it is not possible to clean the display outside of an clean-room - therefore fixing these problems is not economical!
Even it is an old policy - an bad-pixel-exchange-policy exists!
As far as I know there is no dirty-display-exchange-policy!
Could this be an unrecognized problem???
Tell me your opinion!

yes, the same thing has happened to my sister's LCD, a live bug went into the back of the LCD. It looks like 3-4 dead pixels as we expected they are, but it has been moving !! Now it is a dead bug in the middle of the screenshadowlight wrote:Hi guys!

I'm still waiting for my replacement. It's said to ship today so I should get it by this Friday. I had no ideal about bugs\dust getting inside LCD as I thought they are airtight like hard drives.

I thought it too until reality changed my mind. I wish you good luck for a perfect replacement!I had no idea about bugs\dust getting inside LCD as I thought they are airtight like hard drives.
That would be nice! So I'm one of these unlucky peoples, because I know of 3 bad A31p-Flexview-displays (my old one, my replacement one, the one of my friend's machine).IBM told me that getting a dead pixel is just for unlucky people in the minority.
On the other hand my X31-display is perfect!
