Any one using BT on T42p?

#1 Post by edelrc » Sat Nov 19, 2005 7:23 pm

If you use Bluetooth on a T42, I have a question for you?

In the taskbar I have two icons for BT;
- One has the BT symbol bigger and does not do anything when double click and "BT Device Not Found" message when right click.
- The other one is smaller it is the IBM Integrated Bluetooth III.

Now, the bigger icon is useless for me and I cannot get to do nothing with it. The second has many features but after 40min I cannot get it to work with a cell phone.

However, 5 months ago with the same cell phone I had not problem but I think I had IBM Integrated Bluetooth II but not sure, and I also think I was using instead the bigger BT icon in my taskbar...

Did my “Software Installer” install the wrong driver?
Lately my Access Connections was updated? Did it update the BT driver too??

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you're using IBM Bluetooth drivers and not the Microsoft ones. If in doubt, uninstall all Bluetooth devices from Device Manager and install drivers from IBM.

In Control Manager I just uninstall the "IBM Integrated Bluetooth II Software". No other Bluetooth software was present there.

I Downloaded the drivers "IBM Integrated Bluetooth II software for Windows 98 SE-2000-XP" and installed them.
Two devices have just installed now:
- Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator
- IBM Integrated Bluetooth III (not II... Is that normal? Could you check in your T42 that?)

Also, in Control panel I have 2 BT Icons. One called Bluetooth Configuration that does nothing when double click and other called Bluetooth Devices that does open but is it not working with my cell phone. (I don´t have other device to test it with)
Would I maybe have the drivers for the BT for T43 installed rather than T42?

Please, help! :(

Well, I don't think you have T43 Bluetooth Drivers installed on your T42p, as I certain;y haven't noticed this problem, except for one time it upgraded itself to the IBM Bluetooth IV Drivers and I didn't reboot when I started using it; once I rebooted, it was fine. Also, I only have one Bluetooth Icon in my Control Panel...and it says "Bluetooth Configuration"

HTH :)

Yep, that "Bluetooh Configuration" is the one once it worked for me. There is another sister icon in the task bar.

The only one that does appear to be functional is the "Bluetooth devices". I don´t recall having that one before and it appears liked to both Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator and IBM Integrated Bluetooth III. I did not install any other thing related to BT that what the “Software Installer” did.

I see myself do a whole reinstall next wekend for this stupid thing now.

Ughhhhh, I don't like it when Windows puts its own, dumbed down, Device/Stack Manager on something I already have a Device Driver for...Try uninstalling *all* the Bluetooth drivers, and then rebooting...Something should notice that the driver is missing and should then try to put in the latest install package. Be it IBM or Windows, I don't know which; but that should get rid of any conflicting versions of Bluetooth Drivers. ;) :)

You were right!
First I turn Off System Restore.
I uninstalled the only software i have installed; IBM Integrated Bluetooth II
Rebooted.

Installed lastest IBM Integrated Bluetooth II software.
Rebooted.
No only one BT Icon appear in Control Panel; "Bluettoth Devices" and only one in Taskbar. I wanted the other icon that is the one I used to use... but if his one works... it is good for me. Will test it tomorrow.

Just tested a no success.
I pair the devices, okay in that. But no transfer whatsoever between them on either direction. The white symbol on taskbar never lights green either. Actually, I think I am using th Microsoft BT tool, and not the IBM in spite that is the one I have installed.

It´s okay, will reinstall from scratch everything next weekend. Some other good will do too.

Thanks to all.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I found this on the Microsoft Website

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;841803

It lists the IBM Bluetooth II and III Drivers as Compatible with XP SP2...Maybe they are trying to integrate themselves in with the Windows Bluetooth Stack? Strange.....

Cristopher, I think you solved the mistery!

I was installing the IBM Integrated Bluetooth II that is in the list of drivers for the T42p. However, I see that the one that is actually installed is the IBM Integrated Bluetooth III. So it is WinXP SP2 who it is installing the wrong version!!!

Thanks sooo much... I now know how to proceed...

I've had my nightmare trying to change from Microsofts Bluetooth Stack, to the IBM/WIDCOMM one.
In the end, I succeeded installing IBMs.
For some reason, Windows prompt'ed me for the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack drivers, which I choose not to find. That made the Bluetooth device appear in Device Manager, as an USB device. I could then succesfully install the IBM provided drivers/software.
The Bluetooth device can be hidden from Windows by pressing Fn+F5.

Though, if you search around, you will find, that IBM provided a quite old BT version, and if you start experimenting with the newer ones, everything will stop working. I wouldn't recommend that.
Be content with the older IBM provided stack. :)

Well, I decided to go exploring in the System Configuration via the Thinkpad Configuration Program. If you get the Hardware Profiles, you should be seeing the IBM/WIDCOMM Drivers for everything and anything related to Bluetooth. I do think I have successfully emulated the problem by changing one of these to a Microsoft Driver; I later fixed it by uninstalling the MS Drivers, installing the IBM ones, and Rebooting. Take a look around there and see what it says. :)

I prefer the Widcomm drivers and software to MIcrosoft ones. To prevent microsoft drivers from installing, rename bth.inf in directory C:\WINDOWS\inf\ to for example bth.bak or remove/comment out the IBM ID's from that file (see below). After that the hardware install wizard can't find the reference to the Microsoft drivers and installs the next one providing driver to the found hardware ID (if IBM/Widcomm drivers are installed, they are selected, otherwise point to the location of the drivers).

These lines have the ID's for IBM Bluetooth devices:
[IBM.NT.5.1]
Bluetooth UltraPort Module from IBM= BthUsb, USB\Vid_04BF&Pid_0317
IBM Integrated Bluetooth= BthUsb, USB\Vid_04BF&Pid_0318
IBM Integrated Bluetooth II= BthUsb, USB\Vid_1668&Pid_0441
IBM Integrated Bluetooth III= BthUsb, USB\Vid_1668&Pid_2441

When hardware installer founds Vendor and Product id's like this, it installs the BthUSb driver. If they are missing (file renamed or lines removed), installer continues to the next possible file.

Microsoft support says like this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=840635

You had nailed it!
I had slipstreamed the WinXP SP2. That article from Microsoft is gold. It explains all my problem. Can´t wait to go home and start testing...

If you want to get rid of the Microsoft bluetooth stack which came with the Windows XP SP2, follow this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;889814

I'm on Windows Server 2003 now, so I don't have to meddle with that, but it (the Microsoft KB article) worked fine for me when I was running Windows XP.

I did the version where I deleted the Microsoft driver from the active device and then renamed bth.inf. I also uninstalled the IBM bluetooth software.

I rebooted and then bypassed the driver request and installed the IBM Bluetooth software with Software Installer.

The device finds the Widcomm driver!

However, whenever I reboot I get a long time of HDD accesses (10 seconds or more) and a dialog box pops up:

The system cannot find the specified file.

If I dismiss this nothing bad seems to happen... However, it makes booting obnoxious. Any ideas on what it is looking for?

Cheers!
Tony
