DVD+R media compatibilty w/ Ultra bay drives t-23

#1 Post by Shack80 » Mon Nov 21, 2005 4:02 pm

I have a t-23 with the 8x dvd-rom and it will not read any DVD+R burned by my NEC 2500a. Do the DVD-CDRW combo drives have better compatibility with burned dvd's? or will I have to purchase a multi burner to do it?

Thanks, tried searching but I suck at the search and found nothing.

If it's a panasonic/matshita, it may not read a +R disc...different ones do different things. Do a search for your drive on the internet (google) and you should find out its capabilities. If you don't know exactly which drive you have, look in Device manager, under CD/DVD. Good luck

Yes it is a M a t s u s h i t a and I am pretty convinced it will not read +r's. Any idea if the ultrabay combo drives do any better?

Would someone please explain in plain English the T23 "Ultrabay"? Is it an actual bay in which we can insert devices? If so, why must we buy special cables and "racks"?

Also what does IBM mean by "FRU"?

These corporations hire a staff of tech writers. You would think they would know not to write in company specific initials and terms without defining them!

FRU is Field Replaceable Unit, meaning parts that can be ordered and replaced.

Ultra Bay is a device that slides into the slot where the CD goes to expand the functionality of the laptop, many devices can be used in the ultrabay.

thank you Kyocera for clarifying those two terms. I figured "FRU" meant parts but wanted to be sure. I was mystified by "Ultrabay" due to posts and ads that spoke of cables and tray hardware.

IBM has 2 main types of ultrabays: The Ultrabay/Ultrabay 2000 and the Ultrabay slim. The latter is only found in T4x series Thinkpads. Some of the devices that I have used in an ultrabay include:

Optical drive
"Case" for second hard drive
Extra battery
Plastic dummy cover (to reduce weight)
Zip drive

I am sure there are more out there, but these are the most common ones you can find.

A lot of the early T2x series (ie T21's) were delivered with Ultrabay 2000 1.44 floppy drives. The floppy drives were (and are) useful as T21's (and I assume T20's) won't boot off a USB floppy.

Back to my original question. Is the DVD/CDRW ultrabay drive compatible with DVD+R media?
