upgrading to PIII 500, too hard for a novice?

#1 Post by erin » Thu Jul 08, 2004 1:52 pm

I've done some upgrades with my dell desktop, but this is my first laptop that i have to experiment with...and my first time considering a processor upgrade. RIght now the laptop in good working condition. PII 366, 128mb ram, 12 gig HD, win2k. I read some threads about upgrading to an MMC-2 PIII 500 mhz processor. I read the IBM manual and I'm pretty unsure about how difficult this might be. Should I be happy with my PII or go for the upgrade?

I'm assuming you are referring to the 770x or z. I've done several, it's simple enough but know that you'll be breaking it down to almost the bare motherboard in the process. Take your time and do not force anything. Not difficult though.
770x 500Mhz PIII
256Mb RAM
6Gb HD
8Mb VRAM
13.7" SXGA
DEVA

770z. Thanks, maybe I will get the courage to try it. I have a lot of vacation time this summer.

Offering a suggestion for your disassembly. Download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the 770 and load it on another computer. Then follow the disassembly instructions. When I take the screws out, i put them in a line and lay them out in the same order as they appear in the computer. for instance, the bottom screws. There are 6 total. I put the four from the front in a row together, then behind them i put one that's in the middle, then above it, one closer to the left. It looks just how it would if you were looking at the bottom on the laptop. Also, i can't stress enough using a static strap. While you are it, do the memory upgrade to the mainboard too!

Enjoy
