Palm rests on new X-series

#1 Post by travelpad » Tue Nov 22, 2005 7:57 pm

I've used an X20 without problems for almost four years now. I looked at a coworker's T42 and was disappointed that the newer thinkpads don't have the rubberized palmrest surface as found in the X20. I'm looking at replacing the X20 with a new X-series, either X40, or X30 and above. Do any of these models come with the old-style rubberized plastic palm-rests or can I get it as an option. I couldn't find any reference to the material change at either IBM.com, or on Lenovo's site.

Thanks.

Nope. All the current palm rests are 'plastic' now.

I believe the X24 was the last X series with the rubberized palmrest, so if that is really important to you, then an X24 is the most modern machine you can get.

For what its worth, I used to own an X21 and find the X32 just as well-made and nice, despite lacking the rubberized palmrest.

Rubberized Palm Rests

#5 Post by travelpad » Wed Nov 23, 2005 8:28 am

Thanks for the replies. Glad to hear the X32 is just as well made. Too bad about the change in materials though. The beauty of the rubberized palm rests is that it felt comfortable, regardless of the room's temperature (ie: non-ac rooms in far away places).

Thanks

I hate the rubberized palm rests. It looks disgusting because the oil from your skin absorbs into it and it looks really dirty. I rather have an uncomfortable plastic one.

I´ve also read that the paint on the old palm rests tended to get rubbed off after extended use. Not sure if that´s true, but I´m happy with my plastic.

Our old 770s all had the rubber grip rubbed off. It was nice, but it didn't last.

If you must have the rubber (didn't realize that the X3s didn't have rubber :(), then you can always do this: http://www.metku.net/index.html?sect=vi ... /index_eng

And, yes, Plasti Dip is available in the US. I checked. The company's even in the US. (This is a mod I'd likely perform, simply because I like the rubber palm rests, and I'm likely going to get an X32.)
