IBM Software Conspiracy.

#1 Post by defjux » Wed Nov 23, 2005 4:48 am

I installed recently ran the software installer and updated my complement of thinkvantage software. Very soon after, my computer slowed to a crawl and my applications started screwing up; I could only blame this on the new software. When I went to uninstall, I got a "windows installer could not be launched" error. I feared something was seriously wrong with my machine, so I tried uninstalling something unrelated to IBM -- no problems. I went down the list of every program and, interestingly, my Thinkvantage suite is the only software producing this error. Is this a personal problem, or will IBM keep you from managing your own computer at all costs?

this is a good reason to use system restore, it is very difficult to pin point a problem after the fact, create restore points before you install anything and you can go back to the "last known good configuration".

Also try updating Windows Installer. Windows Installer has had to be upgraded to keep up with the newest tools from Microsoft and other vendors. Generally, keeping Windows up to date will keep Installer up to date as well. Like others here, I have all the newest updates and IBM tools and I am not experiencing any problems or slowdowns.

Thanks for the help. I updated the installer, uninstalled everything IBM related, cleaned my registry and the computer works like a dream. Restarts to a usable desktop in just over 30sec with AV installed.

You might also want to make sure you setup your computer so that it's not so susceptible to spyware and what not.

Spyware is the most common problem I've come across when people's computers start slowing down unexpectedly.
