ATI driver gone bad on me ... what to do?

#1 Post by jhonyl » Wed Nov 23, 2005 3:53 pm

Hi,

I had done a system restore a few days ago because I installed .Net 2.0 and wanted to remove it. Since than it happened to me twice: The laptop has gone to sleep by its own, and when I woke it up, the screen was snowy except the mouse that was clear. After trying to play with it for a couple of minutes ... the screen become the blue screen of death saying I had a problem in Ati2mtag.sys at address F68fa610 base F68f1000.

Windows sent a report, and suggested me to update the ATI driver, but on the ATI site they have the software below which tells me that my hardware is not compatible with that driver:

Code: Select all

Installation Verification Software
Download
1 of 1
0.93
11/11/05
This software will determine if Catalyst Mobility™ is compatible with your system.
What should I do now?

Well, .NET 2.0 can be uninstalled with the Add Remove programs control panel.... But for your current issue, you could use the IBM Software Installer and let it update (or downgrade) your driver.

I'm using the Omega driver that folks here directed me to, it's an improvement over the latest ATI driver aside from a few glitches (shaky screen when I suspend). Search for posts that I've posted in, and you'll find the thread.

complete uninstall .NET 2.0 and your current ATI driver

use a software called driver cleaner 3.3 to complete uninstall ATI video drivers on your system www.driverheaven.net

then download the catalyst 5.11 from www.ati.com, NOT the mobility ones, just regular

then use catalyst modder from www.driverheaven.net to install the drivers on your system, they work fine for me, better gaming performance 8)

be on the alert that if this happens again you may need a new system board. i did all the jumping through hoops suggested and was annoyed to have the error return. after getting new systemboard, no problems. this is a known issue, much like the usb slots breaking and also requiring new board!!
