The other day the fan in my T42 broke. It doesn't spin, and the computer gives a "fan error" warning, which can be bypassed, but obviously I don't want to have the computer running without the fan.
I found a replacement fan, took off the keyboard, and plugged it in the broken one's place, and it worked fine, eliminating the error and spinning. But the broken fan is underneath this big copper heat-sink looking thing that doesn't want to budge, so while I have a spinning fan, it's lying outside the computer and useless.
Is there anyway to get under there to replace the fan myself, or will I have to resort to bringing the laptop to experts? I'm no hardware guru, but I do have a fair amount of experience tinkering under the hood of my laptop.
thanks

Try using your Hardware Maintenance Manual, it will show you how to remove practically every part of your T42:

Re: Replacing the fan in a T42?
You can do it yourself, as the copper assembly has one screw (maybe two, I dont remember) and you can replace it. However, I believe that it could void your warranty, so your best bet is to send it to IBM. Of course, if you are out of warranty then go for it, with the HMM it is quite easy.Raoo wrote:The other day the fan in my T42 broke.
