RNR revisited.

#1 Post by jparrot427 » Sat Nov 26, 2005 8:21 am

Hello.
I got to use the new version 3.0 of Rescue and Recovery. It works, good.

My HD is a 40 g on which I have <10 g used. The R&R takes 4.5 hours to completion. When I used True Image, that back up would take <20 minutes. Is this a defect in R&R, or am I doing something wrong. The backup is done to a USB external 2.5" HD, it rotates at 4200, just like the 40 g HD in the G-41.

I got an IBM techie on the line yesterday, he was in Alabama and did not know anything about R&R, he could hardly converse in English. Not much help.

Thanks much. JP.

I noticed the long backup time as well.

I just tried my first backup using Rescue and Recovery 3, and it took over 5 hours to backup 20GB to an USB 2.0 external DVD writer. I did the identical backup immediately following using StompSoft Backup MyPC. This backup took half the time (at less than 2-1/2 hours). I know that Backup MyPC verified the writes to the DVD's, but I saw no indication that Rescue and Recovery did any verifing of the disk writes. It seems that Rescue and Recovery creates the DVD image before the write, while Backup MyPC writes to the DVD on the fly.

Hello.

>> I noticed the long backup time as well.

That is what got my attention.

>> It seems that Rescue and Recovery creates the DVD image before the write, while Backup MyPC writes to the DVD on the fly.

Using any other BU PRG, it takes +/- 20 minutes. But that BU is not bootable as is offered when doing an RNR BU. I love this option. So far, I have been unable to get a knowledgeable IBM techie to explain this to me.

The file called rr30mst.pdf on the IBM site is worth reading. Specially chap # 2. Food for thought !

Have a great day. JP.

As a comparison ...
I'm running a T30 with an 80GB HDD. The system partition is 20GB of which 10GB is used.
I use RnR V3 to create a base level only (no incrementals) copy to both another partition on my HDD *AND* an external drive in a USB enclosure.

The backup to the other partition on my HDD takes about 30-35 minutes and then the copy to the USB enclosure takes another 5 minutes.

Ashley, how are you ?

>>The backup to the other partition on my HDD takes about 30-35 minutes and then the copy to the USB enclosure takes another 5 minutes.

I am obviously doing something wrong. If you have an idea of what it is, do let me know. In the mean time, I am looking into it further.

Be good. JP.

4 Hours?

I did an R&R of an Image in 30 minutes; hmmmmm. Could this be a machine dependent thing?

Christopher, good morning to you. You typed at me thus :

>>I did an R&R of an Image in 30 minutes; hmmmmm. Could this be a machine dependent thing?

It would seem so. My TP is at 2.3 GHz and should do better, time-wise for an R&R, methinks. The only bottleneck is a 4200 rpm C:\ and the USB external drive also is at 4200 rpm.

Reply like yours is pushing me to investigate further. Thanks.

I am on my 8th Thinkpad, I kept upgrading with the times. I love them all.

You be good. JP.

I found that backup performance depended on how many backups had been taken already. R&R keeps a maximum of something like five previous backups. So, when it starts the sixth, or subsequent, backup it merges the earliest two incrementals into one. It seems to me that this merge process can take a very long time and is also variable.

Long R&R.

#9 Post by jparrot427 » Tue Dec 06, 2005 2:01 pm

Hello, Alan.

Thanks for your reply about the long R&R that might be due to merging if incremental BUs. Yes, the text on the IBM site about R&R does explain this quite thouroughly. I am refering to the rr30smt.pdf. Chap2, page 17.

In my case, I have not yet done an incremental BU, base BU is what I was doing and is the gist of my notes on this forum.

Still looking for a solution. Keep at me, I learn everyday.
