IBM Thinkpad 600X TrackPoint
IBM Thinkpad 600X TrackPoint
I have a questions about the IBM ThinkPad 600X TrackPoint. Well.. i have a 600X that i recieved as a gift and i have use it and i decided to get an external mouse but dont really like it anymore. But the TrackPoint doesnt seem to work for some reason, it works whenever windows is shut down and when it is on like the BIOS and stuff like that just not when windows is running. I do have the lastest drivers for it that i have downloaded and i do not have a warranty or anything to contact IBM and have them help me.. Can someone please tell me how i can get it working again so i dont have to use a external mouse anymore? Thanks
It sounds like you have the TrackPoint disabled in your BIOS/IBM Config settings or in your Windows Device Manager.
To fix this from within Windows, you should be able to use the IBM ThinkPad Configuration Utility. In Windows 2000/XP this is found under Start -> Programs -> Access IBM. Alternatively, check in Device Manager to make sure that you TrackPoint has not been disabled manually in there.
To fix this from BIOS directly, you need to enter the BIOS and locate the TrackPoint function and switch it to "Enable". I can't remember offhand which heading it is found under in the BIOS, but you should be able to find it in there somewhere.

Yea i did that i had the TrackPoint enabled but then when i restarted the laptop it said it had an 8611 or something like that error and i have looked through the BIOS like when is start the laptop and then i hit F1 and i did that and looked through all of that and it had nothing about the TrackPoint in it.
Try uninstalling all mouse and trackpoint devices in Device Manager, then reinstalling the driver from this page. Make sure you are using the correct driver for the Windows version that you have.
It's also possible that the Configuration Utility may need to be uninstalled and reinstalled - Configuration Utility on same page as above. Use Add or Remove Programs in control panel to uninstall.

Yea i did what u siad and it gives me the 8611 error when i start up my computer.. do you know where in the BIOS i would go to enable it or something because maybe its not enabled in the BIOS so thats y it gives me the error not really sure but i could try. it only gives me the error when the trackpoint is enabled tho.. do you know what else i could do to fix it? thanks
Error 8611 is a TrackPoint error I think. This usually indicates a hardware failure or other hardware problem with the TrackPoint or the Keyboard. Do you know if the TrackPoint worked correctly before you got the laptop? It is possible that the only fix is to replace the broken TrackPoint hardware, which is done by replacing the whole Keyboard assembly, including the TrackPoint. Pretty easy to do this yourself, and not too expensive -- you should be able to pick up a working or new keyboard on eBay or your favorite computer hardware auction site.
Oh, before giving up on your current hardware, you should also try cleaning all around and the TrackPoint with forced air, and then try pulling out the Keyboard and reseating the keyboard connectors. Sometimes these things will give the keyboard some new life for a bit longer.
