Hi, vielen dank Troubadix for great TP utility!!
The only issue with new version is that after restart the tray icon is missing

. Tested on Winxp_pro and T60.

Yup, currently downgraded to 0.25 and works like charm! No need to see temps the system runs cool.

BTW love to see the downvolting option included in Tpfan - because that's all I need for my T60

to be completely cool&quiet (+battery life)

use Notebook Hardware Control with the ACPI plugin for that (much discussed on this forum!) I use it on both T42s and it's a peach!

). Thought of nhc being the solution, but in my experience it was not that reliable. Now I'm running RMClock for undervolting (and of course tpfc

For Vista users just try the non service version to start with admin rights.:

troubadix I think it's the problem with config of os on my comp. I tried NHC but the undervolting options are greyed out and cpu speed reading locked on max Mhz. I do some research on http://thinkpad-forum.de and found that this is NHC bug (worked flawlessly on nx7400 though - same specs as my current T60

). I've tried RMClock either - two issues: after restart of system all settings reset to defaults (known bug) and the battery life time decreases when RMClock is active

- cpu voltage reduced to 0,95V for all multipliers, max cpu throttling. I think I'll wait for new version of NHC or RMClock - still using tpfc of course! Cheers!!

Troubadix, I just wanted to say thank you very much for this tool. It keeps my x61s in the nice near-silent state that I envisioned for it, and I'd be really unhappy without it. Thank you so much!

hi,
first I want thank troubadix for the 0.28Vista version, it's working fine and helped me find some strange thing, I don't know if it's just me or it is a bug in tpfc

I was using service version for a while and it worked fine, but I've noticed that there is no level1 fan speed in smart mode of tpfc. with 0.28Vista I was able to try this in manual mode ...

if temp reach a level1 switch, fan will start with some speed, but it's higher speed than level1 should be. why? i don't know, but I know that if I set manually level3 and than back level1 the speed is much slower than level1 at the start. fan with "slower" level1 is very silent and almost inaudible (if this is the right word) and still doing its job.
Hope I wrote it in understandable way

So is it a bug or what? because i would love the fan in slower level1 to be on all the time. no noise and still keeping my R61 cool, but in smart mode of course

@chroust: I crosschecked it at my site (WinXP T40 T42 R51 X31) but I didn't get the issue, every thing at it's best....so it may be an effect of your R61, I just don't know

I thought it's a some sort of bug in my R61 or tpfc, so R61 it is

so I have another Q for you, is there a posibility that tpfc could control a rpm of the fan, not just levels 1/2/3? something like speedfan (on my old nb i had GPU fan on 35% all the time and it was quiet and cool)
anyway I am still very satisfied with tpfc

unfortunately not

as the rpms for each fan level are fixed in the code of the EC firmware (embedded controller). Some guys here tried to deal with that but obviously not that lucky

Hi!

Services are isolated under Vista in desktop zero session and not displayed on user desktops. I wrote an icon code attached by namedpipe to tpfc service just to see what's going on with temps and fan.

So if you want to run tpfc_service under Vista, try:

http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/tpfc_icon.zip

tpfcicon.exe will show a temp/fan icon (mind the tool tip) in your systray only while running the attached service version v0.30

working fine under WinXP

this is not finally tested under Vista

may be UAC (user acces control of Vista) might cause some issues

I've noticed that tpfcicon.exe uses a lot of CPU: 1-2% on my system (1.6 ghz core 2 duo LV). Perhaps the polling frequency could be adjustable? Also, when I have the icon window open and I drag it around the screen the movement is not smooth and seems to jump every time the server message is updated. Perhaps this is a hint about where the high CPU usage is coming from.

The text icon is perfect - easy to read and informative.

The icon has been never tested before under Vista

for i'm only runnig WinXP. There will be additional work to do to optimize the code.

I did some rework:

movement is not smooth -> fixed

the polling frequency could be adjustable? -> IconCycle=x [sec]

tpfcicon.exe uses a lot of CPU -> now under WinXP steadily below 1%

The new version has lower cpu time and works perfectly

I noticed when using the thread activity view of the Process Monitor application that tpfcicon.exe creates and exits a thread every time the server message updates (also, fancontrol_service.exe creates and exits a thread every 5 seconds). Is there a way for the program to operate while using a single thread? This might assist in reducing cpu time further (which is very low at the moment

)

Edit: Of course, i know very little about how your program is coded so this might not make any sense

As I use the thread for reading namedpipe or EC register for both can be a bit time taking, there is a way: i don't close the thread after reading and reuse it

the result is not of that efficiency i expected at the service:( but measureable at the icon

Hello troubadix,

First, let me say big thanks for developing the Thinkpad Fancontrol software! It ran flawlessly on my new X61s together with the factory installed Windows XP Pro.

However, as I had ordered a system with 4GB RAM and did not want to switch to Vista 64bit to utilize all of the 4GB RAM I bit the bullet and installed Windows XP Pro X64.

Now, I can access all of my 4GB of RAM and after some effort I finally was able to install drivers so that all unkown devices in the device manager were taken care of.

Unfortunately, I am not able to get your excellent software running under Windows XP Pro X64. I have tried your latest versions including the Vista version and all of them refuse to run with the following error message:

Error during initialization of WinIO Driver.
(winio.sys missing in app folder or failed to load)

Is the winio.sys 32bit and the reason for the problem or is it something else?

as Yariv Kaplan says: The WinIo library allows 32-bit Windows applications to directly access I/O ports and physical memory.

Thanks for the great utility .

But I am not sure if the temperature is accurate cauze I got many different results using several different softwares. such as NHC(Notebook Hardware Control) and RMClock or SpeedFan. Which result should I trust anyway ?

In other newsgroups I have seen sometimes the results of NHC are quoted as wrong

Sometimes the gpu temps are said to be wrong for certain chips as an issue of the chip: some people experienced to have more than 100°C at the gpu...and touched it with the finger tip...no blisters at all

gpu was slightly warm. It's not that easy...you have to dismantle your notebook and take a thermometer

tpfc gives you the highest temp and sensor name in the icon, and as far as I know the results are reliable for cpu in solo core processors, I for myself have got no experience in duo core processors, but until now there are no reports of misreadings.

tpfc also checks no temp values for the HDD, cause that will keep it spinnig up

The current version is ready for download at the signature link after minor changes in balloons and tooltips.

The previous version is still available under:

first of, a BIG BIG thank you for the fan control software.
I installed v .17 a long time ago, because I just wanted to test it and not have it as a service. It was so great I kept it since.

Now, last week, I installed the newest version with the changed driver which stops the logs and its been running great. I like the temperature read in the icon. And it has not crashed yet.

But now I've just encountered a problem. I just wanted to write how great the newest version is (it absolutely is), and noticed I can't find the icon in the taskbar. I checked in the computer administration and it says the service is still running.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Did you run tpfcicon.exe ? The service and icon have been split up into separate programs to aid in Vista compatibility. Put a shortcut to tpfcicon.exe into your start menu "startup" folder to run it on boot.
