Did you expand the systray to see all icons? May be there is combination of paramaters in fancontrol.ini that makes the icon hide :?: please proceed as follows:

1. save your c:/tpfancontrol/fancontrol.ini (i.e. to desktop)
2. download latest version again
3. unzip
4. execute uninstall
5. execute install
6. execute settings and copy and paste your temp settings from old fancontrol.ini to the new one
7. close and save new fancontrol.ini
8. execute restart
9. delete unzipped files and old .ini

if the problem persists please post the parameters of your fancontrol.ini

ciao, troubadix

edit: xtal was faster than I  my remarks just concern with WinXP

EDIT: to xtal

Thanks for the hint, but I never had the exe in startup or autostart.
I worked Ok just until know and I suppose a restart will fix it.
I don't even think I have that specific exe you mentioned, maybe I haven't got the latest version after all.

EDIT: and you were faster than me

System tray is allways expanded and the .ini is set to show the Icon.
I'll restart the computer and report back.

If that doesn't work I'll reinstall it as you suggested.

System restarted, and the icon is back.

Strange....

I have no idea how it is programmed, but is there a posibillity that the icon could disappear from constant going into and out of standby?

Just out of interest:
What language is it programmed in? Is the source code still public?

I had the tool running for days with lots of standbys and hibernates, but I never experienced this effect :?: but the behavior of icons in windows is sometimes strange

The program is written in VC++ and based on code of the authors mentioned in readme. Sorry, for the sake of time of maintaining it, the code is not public.

weird keyboard behavior

#726 Post by ivanhelguera » Sat Dec 08, 2007 12:11 pm

First, big thanks to toubadix for providing this tool, and to all people here for helping the project - it makes my t42 experience VERY satisfying. Lenovo should buy it ;-).
I have ran into a weird problem. After replacing Norton AV with AVG I've got the AltGr-S key linked to switching TPFC off. A DOS window appears for a second, the icon is gone, and the fan gets on.
It's EXTREMELY annoying, as the combination in question is responsible for polish character ś, which is very common.
As I said, I suppose it's not directly connected to TPFC, but maybe someone here has any idea?
EDIT: Apparently, it's been made to start tpfancontrol stop (I think). the binding is on even after uninstalling TPFC
EDIT 2: Apparently, AltGr-T starts the service.

@ivanhelguera: ...ooops  [censored] happens, once upon a time I installed these shortcuts...and forgot about it. Shame on me  .

I have replaced the files tpfcstart and tpfcstop without shortcuts in the download package. Instead of downloading and installing again go to the files tpfcstart and tpfcstop anywhere you placed it, look at c:\tpfancontrol\, too. Then right mouse click on the file, chose properties, a window opens where you can kill the shortcut. Sorry for that issue :?

THANKS for quick help - I was in a desperate mood with a huge translation work on my hands. Any ideas how come those shortcuts started to work alll of the sudden after months of no problems whatsoever - what I remember having done is switching the AV software?
And huge THANKS for the software. My T42 works great - just silent when I want it to be silent. I just downloaded your soft, the driver, switched on the PPLAY for AC... And I'm happy.
Thanks,
IH

Hello,

First of all, thank you very much troubadix for your excellent job ;)

I have the same problem as reported above. Every time I reboot Windows, the service starts (when I check services in admin tools, it is running) but there is no icon in the tray :(
It is not a problem of "hidden icon", the icon is simply not there. So, if I want to see this icon again, I have to stop and restart the service manually and the icon reappears...

How can you explain that this icon disappers when we reboot Windows?

Thanks,
Bye

I guess this issue is due to an unsufficient number of MaxReadErrors (default= 10) as during (re)boot or coming up from hibernate/standby there are obviously some other processes reading and writing to EC register that we can get lots of faulty results. This also explains flawless function after restarting the service when boot has finished. So before I have to change the code please increase MaxReadErrors (i.e. =30) and post your logfile (Log2File=1) and your fancontrol.ini parameters if the issue persists.

Please download again, and change fancontrol_service.exe. This kind of message should not to be seen:

Please post whether the issue persists.

I really really love your program!!! I just wanted to tell you that I am also having the same problem in that after installation it works wonderful but when I reboot my computer, the icon doesn't show up in the taskbar. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the older 0.25 version, and there is no problem in the icon not coming up on the taskbar upon reboot. ( Having the highest temp come up on the taskbar is truly ingenious.)

Sorry but not that computer literate - don't know how to get the log files to help you out though...

Fancontrol for Dummies?

#735 Post by powpow » Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:35 pm

First - Thank you for your efforts so far.

I'm not so smart but I hate the fan noise... I figure you all are pretty trustworthy and competent so I just installed and I'm enjoying the quiet.

Will I be fine if I just leave it in "Smart" mode forever? My main concern would be
1) I'm going to set the thing on fire or otherwise destroy my machine/data
2) I've slowed my machine down in terms of processing power

I'm a general business user. Lots of browser work, Excel, and listening to podcasts. Windows XP Pro SP2 on a pretty new Thinkpad. No gaming and really no graphics work.

As the title suggests: perhaps it is possible to post the instructions at the beginning of the thread or make a sticky thread for other folks searching for "fan noise"?

Thanks again.

@tockki: I guess one time I had accidentally posted a buggy version 0.30 :(
jketzetera wrote:...as I had ordered a system with 4GB RAM and did not want to switch to Vista 64bit to utilize all of the 4GB RAM I bit the bullet and installed Windows XP Pro X64.

Unfortunately, I am not able to get your excellent software running under Windows XP Pro X64
...may be there will be a solution, as I found a port driver with 64-bit support:

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/dev/port/index.shtm

If you want to have a first test with a rewritten Shimodax's last version V0.18 (non service):

http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/tpfc64.zip

Install portdriver first (in zippackage, mind the license agreement), then start fancontrol.exe, should even work with Vista64 :D

1. no
2. no
just my opinion and experience...but usage at your own risk

Still the same issue. :-(

Edit: Yes!!! It works. When I use MaxReadErrors=30, then it works! When I have default value 10, icon is missing after restart.

Edit: Strange - now it works even if I have set the MaxReadErrors value back to 10.

So as conclusion - issue has gone, icon after restart is visible in systray. Thank you very much Troubadix for your work.

Nothing extraordinary to be found in your logfile :?:

as I said before: I guess one time I had accidentally posted a buggy version 0.30 :(

so please download again from the link in signature and use tpfcicon.exe (in zippackage) to check if it can connect to the service.

Please post the result.

Hello!

I downloaded the lastest version in your signature but nothing has changed! There is still no icon in the tray after a (re)start of Windows! :(

I tried to change some files, and then to uninstall the service, to remove all files and to reinstall it properly but no changes.

Here is the log for the two last days (Windows has been rebooted 2-3 times those last days):

Code: Select all

Nothing extraordinary again in your logfile.

I understand your post the way that the problem occurs after starting (booting) or restarting Windows: there is no icon. When you restart the service after boot there is an icon.

 As xtal says, try tpfcicon.exe:
if tpfcico.exe can connect to the service:
only the icon has disappeared, but the program of the service is running.

2nd possibility: tpfcicon.exe cannot connect to the service, the program of the service has crashed. This is some useful information.

Please use ShowTempIcon=0, too, to see possible different behaviour of old and new icon.

I revised the code for bugs causing this behaviour, it is not in all probability, but please exchange fancontrol_service.exe:

I have been following your advices but still have the same problem as Mariton. I tried the latest download and used the revised fancontrol_service zip but sadly I still get no icon on reboot.

I ran tpfcico.exe after reboot and the icon reappears. However, when I click on the icon in the system tray, only the "log" window comes up and not the other windows to the left where there is the temperature of each sensors window, and fan speed window.

So I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it. The program is once again running normal with all the windows showing (until I reboot it.) Don't know what exactly is causing this problem (sorry I can't be of more help...)

I thought maybe if I put tpfcico.exe in the startup programs, the icon would be there... The icon is there but as I written before all the windows don't appear... only the log window.

Don't know if this will help but I put a sample of the log that pops up after executing tpfcicon.

The header of the window says...

...so do I  :(
but your postings are very helpful, for they tell me that the service is up and running and only the icon got lost

just 2 things:

1st: please try parameter ShowTempIcon=0 in fancontrol.ini -> the old symbolic icon should appear to see whether old and new icon show the same behavior

2nd: and please tell me, what does it mean when you say "reboot" i.e. go to "Start" -> "Switch off" -> "Reboot" that means reboot WinXP (I hope we are talking about WinXP:wink: [in Vista services are not to be seen for they are isolated, all you can do is use tpfcicon.exe which is an icon process connected to the service by a namedpipe])

Just to clarify, tpfcicon.exe is a separate program that provides an icon and log window and interfaces with the background service (fancontrol_service.exe). The service fancontrol_service.exe also provides an icon but it's sometimes not visible (as in your case). Just put tpfcicon.exe in your start menu as a workaround.

My OS is XP and reboot meaning turning the computer off and back on.

Tried the parameter for showtempicon = 0 but to no avail the icon isn't up. Also tried maxreaderrors = 30 but that doesn't work either.

Hmm.. not a programmer but using the tpfan program in the 0.25 version it works wonderfully. I noticed that in the 0.25 version program the icon is the first program to show up in my system tray. Oh well I guess it's one of those things the sequence that the programs load for each system is different and maybe that is the difference between one who gets the icon and others who doesn't but then again I am no programmer... ^^

Sorry that I can't be of more help...

..I think you can  , and till now you did a excellent testing job :D :D

I see the problem in the co-operation of OS and service while booting. Introducing the digital icon I also change the code to trim the used memory by SetProcessWorkingSetSize function. But MS says: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms686234.aspx
Using the SetProcessWorkingSetSize function to set an application's minimum and maximum working set sizes does not guarantee that the requested memory will be reserved, or that it will remain resident at all times.
So I recompiled the service without this memory saving function:

Please be so kind an have another test :? for I can't do it, everythings working fine here

Tried the newly compiled program but alas no icon. Very strange...

I was wondering whether there is a way to compare the boot processes/startups between the old 0.25 version and the new 0.30 version. <I am not a programmar but just a thought> If the 0.30 version also boots up early like the 0.25 version maybe there would be less of a conflict. (I am basing that 0.25 version is booting up early because it is the first icon that pops up in my system tray.)

But then again sequence wouldn't really matter becuase when I uninstall the program and reinstall it the icon comes back like it should..

What if I don't uninstall and just reinstall the program... would that work? Hmm... I'll be back.
