I'm using version 0.24 -> via NHC @ a T60. Are there any benefits for me setting up the latest fan control software?

What can be regarded as "safe" temperatures? Right now it's 60-65. But it annoyes me because the temperature keeps raising and when it it's 65 degrees the fan starts blowing.

Don't change a system you are happy with

"safe" is an unsafe term

90 degrees centigrade will do your chips no harm, possibly your finger tips on keyboard

, but if you're running these high temps for a very very very long time you have to keep an eye on your HDD temp, that should stay definitly below 60° C to minimize the risk of lifetime reduction (HDD temp is not monitored by TPFanControl).

All of that my own opinon, use TPFaControl at your own risk

I just installed tpfancontrol v041 on my T61. Working like a charm, it is. But I'm wondering . . . There are two 'battery' sensors: one at 0x7c (5 bat) and another at 0x7e (7 bat). The one at 0x7c is always at 50C--from the moment I turn on until I turn off; no amount of 'fanning' will bring it down. So:

1. is it safe to comment this sensor out?
2. how do I do so? I tried "IgnoreSensors=bat" but it still showed "5 bat" and "7 bat" in the "active" list when I ran it. I also tried removing the slashes before "SensorName5=bat", but that didn't remove it either. What am I missing?
3. is there any way to turn sensor 5 off and leave sensor 7 on? Sensor 7 seems to be more indicative in that it varies from 26C on upwards. I ask because they seem to share the same name ("bat").

2. any sensor that is found by its name in "IgnoreSensors= " is read out and shown but the value is ignored computing the thermal fan switch("switch" value), while "IgnoreSensors=bat" is set, both of them are read and shown, but ignored.
3. so you have to rename sensor 5 by e.g. "SensorName5=aaa" (without slashes in front) and after set "IgnoreSensors= aaa" to have it ignored.

...yeah, some day we will have a FAQ page

btw: most of these sensor names come from T43 where some guys found them using some cans of cooler spray...but locations change with different TP models

hmmm, trial run 0.41 now.

so, what temperature did you guys set to turn on the fan, currently the default setting is 65degC only the FAN will kick off.

You don't want to know what I set mine to!

Because it's so hot where I work, I like the fan on as much as possible; and a steady hum is better imho than cycling on / off. So I run on level1 from 42 - 50, level3 50-60 and level7 60+. It may be overkill, but I think the replacement cost of a fan is cheaper than a system board.

no worry, processor can sustain max temperature of 100degC

Oh, I'm aware of that. I just like a cool running machine. Heat is the enemy!

Tried this utility today and while I loved the improvement in fan noise the temp of my GPU quickly rised to alarming (?) values. 62 degrees Celsius and climbing before I switched to "BIOS mode". Also a "clicking" noise appeared from the area inside the machine where the GPU is located. I got abit worried and switched back to manual mode with fan speed set to 1 which seemed to work fine and the "clicking noise" stopped. Is 65 C really an okay temp to use for GPU and CPU? The case of the machine was so hot I was almost worried it would start melting

the step: Level=55 1 of older versions disappeared by copy&paste

I'll fix that, but meanwhile edit fancontrol.ini to your needs. 65° C shouldn't be a threat to your cpu or gpu.

is okay for my X61 to turn on the FAN at this temperature. but for T43, i afraid the southbridge is getting too HOT !!!

I think what gunston is saying (he's usually quite helpful!) is that a lot of us have had to either search for users with the same machine type who have reported their experience or read the instructions and give it a go on our own. It's very easy to give control back to BIOS, so trying it is really quite a low-risk proposition. [But if your machine fries it's not my--or anyone else's--fault!]

it won't fry, no worry, because all of the designed CPU had the capability of sustaining 100degC .

v0.41 is great!

I have a suggestion for the readme text files. Most of the things that can be simply "double-clicked" in XP require administration privileges to work properly in Vista. This includes:

fancontrol.exe
install_service
uninstall_service
start_service
stop_service

All of these require a right click and "Run as administrator". If they are not run with admin access, fancontrol.exe fails with a winio.dll error while the service .lnk files fail without any message.

The initial setup.exe and TVicPortInstall41.exe properly request admin privileges when launched (the UAC window pops up) so these are OK.

Is there any way to modify fancontrol.exe or the .lnk files to request UAC admin privileges like the setup.exe does?

I installed fancontrol version 0.25svc on my thinkpad Z61m.

In smartmode, it seems to work nicely.

If I go to BIOS mode, Fancontrol enters in a strange process, where it switches endlessly between BIOS mode and Smartmode, staying about 4seconds in BIOS mode and one second in Smartmode.

In Manual mode level 7, same kind of switching between level 7 (4seconds) and level 1 (1 second).

Any ideas ?
