cheap memory

#1 Post by jsklar » Sun Nov 27, 2005 9:42 pm

so theres this really cheap memory deal at newegg...

70 bucks for a gig of Transcend (says they use samsung chips) though i've never heard of the company its really cheap...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820208312

would it be so bad if i stuck that in my t43 to add to the 512 standard?

or is it worth paying the cash to get crucial?

the OCZ and Mushkin didn't look so much more expensive on newegg...

I've been using that exact RAM for 6 weeks now, well before the lowered price and all the rebates. No problems. If they really use Samsung chips that's great as they are as good as any (you mentioned Crucial). My sticks have no way of IDing the chip-maker and I'm too lazy to Google the numbers on the chips [Actually I'm blind as a bat and can't see the numbers without a freakin' electron microscope!].

Good Luck,

Yeah it's a nice deal. Now if only someone would offer a deal on 1GB of PC2700 RAM as the price of that seems to go UP almost daily. You can buy 2 of the 1GB DDR2 sticks and still have change for McD's, for the price of 1 lousy stick of 1GB PC2700 for a laptop. It don't make sense to me that the difference is THAT great.

I hear ya. PC2700 1GB for my Mac Mini was about $100 a few months ago when I was considering it. Now I want it, and I see it up about $30.

I don't like cheap RAM either. I either get name brand, or nothing. Cheap RAM stinks, I've seen to many problems from bad RAM to waste time/money on it.

Cheap memory works until it doesn't. Same as name brand stuff, but in my limited experience with notebooks and desktop computers is that cheap RAM seems to go bad more often and sooner. Failures seem to happen 18-36 months down the road, with just under half of the sticks failing. It may not be statistically relavent, but it's my experience nonetheless. YMMV/

well, the chips are samsung ... but anyway its got a lifetime warranty so if it fails, i can get a new one ....

plus 18-36 months down the road i'll probably have an intel powerbook to replace my thinkpad

Intel Powerbooks are still a good way off, the iBooks are going x86 mid-2006; the Powerbooks are staying with the IBM PowerPCs for awhile and I think it will be longer for them to come over to Intel. Also, emulation software may be used for a few features (Ughh, emulation, )
