Uninstalling -- Rescue & recovery

#1 Post by Tilyou » Mon Nov 28, 2005 7:17 am

I deleted "Rescue and Recovery" okay (I didn't like it) but I still have a recovery folder on an external drive that contains a backup of my hard drive.

The recovery folder is over 40 GIGs! and worse: I can't delete it!

Any tips?

I've tried running

attrib -h -s -r /s from a Windows XP command line (DOS emulator) window; and tried renaming the folder "temp" which caused a utility called cleanup to mark all the files for deletion on the next rebooting.

But none of that worked.

Try the method posted in the following thread for deleting problem files and folders.

Thanks for the suggestion -- but there's a glitch.

Recue & Recovery created two secure folders: one on installation ("R" on my hard drive") and other on an external USB 2.0 hard drive when I did an actual backup.

After I uninstalled R&R deleting "R" was easy -- but I still can't delete the folder on the external hard drive. Your suggestion requires "safe mode" and in safe mode I can't get access to the USB drive.

Is there an alternate method to remove the folder?

Or a way to access external USB 2.0 drives in safe mode, so I can use the trick you mentioned.

Thanks!

Install R&R again, delete all backups using R&R, uninstall R&R.

Many thanks! I shoulda thought of that.

The road to the fix was not straight. At first the reinstalled R&R didn't recognize the old backup on the USB drive, and after fussing around (configuring R&R to back up to that drive, rebooting, changing the name of the old backup folder to the name I gave for new backups, starting a backup, then canceling) the old backup folder just disappeared! Fine with me.

The punchline is I'm using R&R now, since I finally paid enough attention to see I can exclude directories with MP3 files (for example) which don't compress and just make the backup folder huge.

I still think the security feature is a nuisance. It ought to be deleteable without such dancing.
