R51 or R52

#1 Post by CoffeeBeans » Tue Nov 29, 2005 6:07 pm

A friend is looking to buy a R series TP, and he has two in mind, both of similar spec, except for the CPU.

They are the R51 (2883 ELU) with Pen M 725 and the R52 (185822U) with Celeron M370.

I know nothing about the Celeron CPU, but as they are of similar spec, except one is a newer model, which TP would you guys choose? Would you go for the slightly older model with the Pen M or the newer model with the Celeron M CPU?

Both are selling for less than $1000, and budget is tight.

Well, it depends on the other specs too, but I personally would definitely go with the R51 since it has the Pentium M.

I would go with the R51 with the Pentium M as well if other parts are similar and if your friend doesn't plan to do major upgrades later on. With R52 you can get DDR2 RAM (cheaper) and possibility of adding Bluetooth.

What about R52 with Pentium M?

The R51 > Pen M 725, 30G HD, 256 RAM, DVD/CDRW, and XP Pro.
The R52 > Celeron M 360, 40G HD, 256 RAM, DVD/CDRW and XP Home SP2.

An additional stick of 512 will be added to either one of the machine.

The R52 with Pen M is nearly $200 extra

Hmm, you might want to look at the specs again:

R52 - CD-ROM, no wireless, Gb LAN
R51 - DVD/CD-RW, Intel b/g, 10/100 LAN

So I would say the R51 is a better deal, although a bigger/faster hard drive would be nice to have.

What about R51e? They seem really cheap here, but you lose the UltraBay, docking options, and UltraNav.
