FRAUDULENT EBay auctions are rampant.. beware

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Tue Nov 29, 2005 11:50 pm

just took a look at ebay..
searched for thinkpad T43p..
most of the so called auctions are scams..
using hijacked ebay i.d.'s..

all these so called auctions seem to have a common thread, the seller wants the sucker to email him at an email address different from the ebay email address..

same on the X41 search..

really sad..

so you guys looking for bargains, remember, there is no free lunch..

happy holidays.. :)

So, what exactly distinguishes an auction from a hijacked account from a legitimate one?
Thx for the warning in any case ...

Take a look at this thread:

I have seen many like this out there on eBay, and have reported most of them. (Some were taken down moments after I saw them).

I had someone hijack my account back in 2000, and tried buying Powerbook for $2500, and two football jerseys for $75-100. This all happened while I was browsing eBay looking for Thinkpad parts. As a result, I changed my password and upped my security/firewall. Not sure how it happened. But what saved me was the email confirming my winning bid. I was able to reply to the sellers instantly to cancel the bids.

Well, like Bill said,They want you to email first usually, and always to a different email than what is listed with ebay..!!!
I had someone hijack my account back in 2000,
This happened to me just about 4 months ago....but the stupid thing is,I'm on Ebay pretty much everyday, and always have things i'm watching....why they would try an account that has watched items in it is beyond me....obviously i'm gonna be back....So I did the same thing, changed ALL web passwords, even internet access password, and bumped up my security.....OH,and gave the wife a lesson on links in emails....as thats prob how it happened..!!!!....But it was the listing cofirmation email I recieved that let me know that something was going on that shouldn't..!!!

Careful..!!!

I work for an automotive company selling cars and motorcycles on eBay. You better believe we have people trying to scam us everyday. We have had our accounts stolen more than once (that is, until I started working here :)). The crackers tried to divert our sales into overseas accounts.

Anyways, There are many factors involved in an eBay scam, user incompetitence, weak passwords, weak network security, etc.

As far as bidding on someone elses wares.. in my industry, the sales made on eBay usually involve the buyer calling us beforehand. But for small-time eBay shopping, you can only hope..
