Win 2000 Question

#1 Post by BruisedQuasar » Wed Nov 30, 2005 4:53 pm

It is my understanding that T23 owners can load any Windows version we like from a standard full install Win CD & D\L- install the drivers from IBM.

Is Win 2000 like other pre-Win XP O/S in that you can format & install any version on a system that ran an older version? What I am getting at is this. Owners of systems that came with XP or XP + SP1 cannot use their recovery\install CDs if they installed SP2. They get a message reporting they are attempting to load an earlier version onto XP SP2. We do not have this problem with Win 2000, correct? That is, a person with W2K and all three Service Packs installed can still re-install Win 2000, correct?

True, but you will go back to an earlier Service Pack version and have to upgrade again after the reinstall. If you have any programs that are dependent on your current SP version you better uninstall them and be ready to reinstall them again. At least this has been my experience. If you can't get into windows to do this, then be prepared to deal with some strange quirks which can be overcome but with reinstalling the software in question after your SP upgrades.

Thank you for the reply. I just ordered a copy of W2K SP3, which is exactly the version that came loaded from IBM.

If you delete all the partitions and have the drivers you need, you can load anything you want regardless of what was there before. But it is a clean install, not an in-place upgrade, and likely not a recovery CD.
