A31p: Clock runs slow

#1 Post by Skwit » Fri Dec 02, 2005 5:53 am

Hi,

I'm at my wits end here: Everytime I start my TP, the clock is set approx. to the time I turned it off the last time, maybe some hours before. Sometimes the clock doesn't changes the hour, i.e. it's two or three times 10.26. The clock is always behind, never ahead.

The errors are not only in windows, also in the BIOS. But: The TP was at warranty inspection some days ago and the CMOS battery has been changed. The voltage of 2.97V confirms this (should be 3V).

I checked for malware, searched the net, no solution. I don't want to rely on an timeserver.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Christian

Not really a help I guess, but I remember sometime in the past, with older versions of Windows, that certain programs would tie up the processor so much that the clock would basically stop for a period of time. I could find my clock to be off by many minutes when I ran these programs (can't recall which ones now). I haven't really seen this behavior in XP, but I imagine it's possible. OTOH I suppose it could be a hardware problem.

BTW, when you change the system time in Windows, it changes the system time in the BIOS as well - and vice versa.

Are you logging in to a domain?

Is your time zone set correctly in Windows?

@GomJabbar: I read the issue with the tied-up processor, but I haven't really changed my programs. I also have an eye on the taskmanager.

@SeanM: I don't log into a domain and my timezone is correct.

Well. . . what kind of machine is it, what version of Windows, and when did this start happening?

It's a TPA31P R5G, exactly three years old. It started about 4-5 months ago. I noticed, that the "Hit F11 for Recovery" menu item did not appear, when I had removed the akku. I had to wait 20s, then it appeared. I thougt, maybe it was a clock-problem.

After some time my windowsclock began to slow down, in the end she was 4-5hours late after 2 hours "realtime" gone. So I decided to return the TP for warranty, which was nearly at its end and I had some minor issues.

The TP returned, I got a new display for free ;)), but the clock-problem was still there. Not as worse as before, but noticable. That's the story. Oh, system is WinXP Pro.

I have two events in the event manager which I can't solve:
- "%DFUBTUSB.SvcDesc%" cannot be startet, file not found
- From ati2mtag: I2C read/write error

The appear everytime I boot the PC. Esp. the latter one is interesting, because I2C is responsible for communications between ICs, maybe the hardwareclock has something to do with it...

Solved!

Two Months later...

My HD crashed and I had to go into the Pre-Desktop-Area via F11. There are some diagnostic tools, one of them tests various ICs on the mainboard.

The RTC (Realtime Clock) as well.

I tested the RTC, the test said FAILED (as expected). The second try: PASSED. Third, fourth and so on, always PASSED. After doing this my clock works again like a charm, I'm so happy!

I'd like to help, but I don't have this test in my version of PC-Doctor.
