Batteries for t41p
Batteries for t41p
So, i just got my t41p, i wiped all of the ibm crap off it and installed my xp and all my goodies on it and i'm all set. I love it.
My only inquiry is about the battery. Its huge, and heavy. What are my options for using a different battery besides the huge one that connects in the back, are there smaller ones? How much do they cost?
Thanks

Re: Batteries for t41p
I'm assumung you have the 9 cell battery that sticks out the back of your ThinkPad. You can get a 6 cell battery (Part number: 08K8214). IBM's price is $160, but using pricegrabber.com or bizrate.com you can get much better prices (just type in the part number).

I guess its the 9 although it only lasted for about 4.5 hours.

Re: Batteries for t41p
If it is sticking out the back of the TP then it must be the 9 cell battery. I love my 9 cell and the protrusion does not bother me. With the right power settings I can get 5+ hours when I have too.
Like the previous poster said you can get the six cell battery and it will be flush with teh rear of your laptop. You will loose some battery time.

You know I keep seeing reports of this 9 cell battery life going down. I first heard 7 hrs, then 6.5 then 5.5 now this guy is getting 4.5. What is the real 9 cell life? I am getting a T42p and am now getting worried. I thought the Pentium M got really great battery life but I am not seeing it. My T23 has a small battery and I get 3.5 hrs out of that. So whats going on here? Are the centrinos not all they are cracked up to be?

My 2.0GHZ P4-M notebook gets less than 2hrs of battery life with a lower resolution, less bright screen, 4200 RPM drive, 512MB RAM, and Intel integrated graphics. My 2.0GHZ P-M (Centrino without the A/B/G card) gets ~3hrs with the 6 cell while being the equivalent of a 3.2GHZ P4-M, 7200 RPM HDD, 1GB RAM, and workstation graphics card. I notice that turning off wireless gives me over half an hour of additional battery life.

Ok, here is is:
Pentium M Banias: 1.7ghz
Core Voltage: 1.484
Thermal Guideline: 24.5W
Manufacturing Technology: 0.13 micron
6 cell battery lasts 4hrs (acording to IBM) 3hrs (users)
9 cell lasts 6hrs (according to IBM) 4.5hrs (according to users)
Pentium III M: 1.2ghz
Core Voltage: 1.5
Thermal Guideline: 22.0W
Manufacturing Technology: 0.13 micron
My battery lasts 3.5 hrs (user and IBM)
Pentium M Dothan: 2ghz
Core Voltage: 1.340-1.276 V
Thermal Guideline: 21.0W
Manufacturing Technology: 0.09 micron
So basically the T41p has a faster PIII M and it runs hotter and uses the same voltage pretty much. So there is really no battery improvements here at all. The difference is the T41p uses a big honkin 9cell battery and the T23 uses a small battery. I bet if the T23 had the T41p battery it would run for 8 hrs.
I would like to hear from people with this 2ghz Dothan on a T42p model. How long does your battery last?

I'm not talking about the P4 chip, that whole line was made to fool the consumer. Nobody not AMD, IBM or Intel is getting past 2.5ghz with a real processor. If the P4 wasn't altered to increase clock speed at a performance disadvantage it would be running at 2.6ghz tops.Daniel wrote: > 50% overall battery life with MUCH better performance isn't hype, is it?
No, what I am referring to is the PIII-M. That was a great chip as far as I am concerned. Am I wrong? I might be but I don't think you really see a speed difference past 1.2ghz. My brother has the Athlon 64 2800 mobile chip and we stand head to head in boot and photoshop tests. I have the 1.2ghz PIII. He even has the 64mb Radeon 9600 in his laptop. Now granted my computer is a T23 and he has an eMachines but the specs are the specs.
Does anybody have any real data on this? I looked up the specs of the 1.2PIIIM and the 1.7PM (above) and they look very similar. I would like to test all of these processors in setiathome and see how many work units each one crunches in a day.
At seti@home, I'm sure the Pentium M blows the P-III away. On a 933 MHz desktop P-III, seti@home used to average just over 9 hours. On a 1.6 GHz Pentium M, it averages just over 2. At the same clock speed, the Pentium M is significantly faster than a P-III (at 600 MHz it is faster than a P-III 866). The huge 1 MB cache of the Pentium M (along with faster memory and bus, etc.) really gives it a large advantage over the P-III.
Also, you looked up what would be the maximum power usage for the CPUs, but you also have to consider the idle power usage - I bet the Pentium M uses less power when idle than the mobile P-III.

I added the Dothan specs to my eaerlier post. Yeah they are way better than both banias and PIII M. I bet you are right about those seti specs though. The cache might help out alot. I wonder what the specs would be on the 2ghz dothan.Chun-Yu wrote: Also, you looked up what would be the maximum power usage for the CPUs, but you also have to consider the idle power usage - I bet the Pentium M uses less power when idle than the mobile P-III.
