Which Thinkpad To Get

#1 Post by worldsmart » Sat Dec 03, 2005 11:36 pm

Not sure to get t43 with flexview or z60 m with american express. I heard t43 has lots of fan noise issues or get a t42 with little bit slower chip.

I need a laptop with dedicated video , 2 or more usb ports, good to have wirefire. Has has a flexview(does that mean higher resolution ??)

I had to decide between the T43 and the T42; you can see my choice in my signature; the fan noise is 90% a matter of personal preference, 5% perception, and 5% some of the earlier T42 models. Mine seems to have very minimal fan characteristics and no heat problem whatsoever. :)

There have also been non-T43 models that have had the "fan always on" problem as well. This is more of a BIOS and EC issue then a build issue. It appears as if OCD engineering got the upper hand and the fan in all models try to cool *everything* in the Thinkpad with a temperature sensor; a tall order indeed. As an example, there is another thread on this forum that talks about the "fan always on option" on even the T42. The later release T43s seem to, for the most part, not have this issue.

Isn't flexview(15") better for typing, than 14.1. I will be using my laptop for web design and photoshop.

*shrugs* I can't really say. I have done everything from Photoshop to Premeire to PyMol rendering to typing for hours on end. In the end, it depends on what you like the most, not what is generally said as "better for typing" or whatnot. Have you gone to Office Depot to check out a T43 next to a Z60? I would be leaning towards flexview myself since, having seen it and typed on it, I can say it is pretty good for that; though I haven't seen the screen offerings on the Z60 so I can't say which one would be better for you. You can always get higher resolutions, especially on the Z60 WSXGA, but there is a tradeoff; namely that of weight. Higher resolution doesn't always translate into typing and reading clearly. There have been some threads where people actually went back to SXGA+ from UXGA or wanting to go from SXGA to XGA. Again, it is 50% personal preference. If you can see the two screens close up, then go for it. :)

Officedepot near me only have z60m and t42 . Does anyone has a z60m is it pretty heavy to carry around, I really cann't decided between z60m or t43. How easy it is to upgrade the hd on thinkpads and install a bluetooth module on a t43 if it doesn't have one

aside from the fact i can not understand why anyone would WANT a Z60anything and not yet haveing seen a Z60 it SHOULD be relatively easy to swap the HDD if the Z60 follows the ibm tradition of easy upgradeability of hard drives..

you are on your own with the blue tooth..
you would need to buy the antenna and mounting parts and that would cost more than a model that caqme with BT..

IMHO, the Z60 series appears to me to be more of a lenovo inspired design than an ibm inspired design..

If I had unlimited laptop budget, I'd happily get a Z60m as a supplement to my T42. It'd be nice to have a widescreen laptop for a change, and it's still a Thinkpad.

Looked at a number of machines for my boss, who wanted a sub 5-pound widescreen with an integrated optical drive. Since I normally stick with ThinkPads for the company, waited for the Z series to arrive. Choice came down to a Z60t & a Vaio S580. The S580 was purchased because it was slightly smaller & lighter, though it is comparable to the Z60t in most features. Also, my boss was happy with a Vaio he had a few years ago. Price wasn't a factor -- the Sony cost $3500. It seems like a nice machine, though I'll be interested to see how long the battery ACTUALLY lasts. A Sierra EVDO PC card really sticks out -- vulnerable to damage. The Z60t built-in EVDO is a plus. If the X series could hold an optical drive, it could have been a contender, even without widescreen. The Sony is going to have a lot of miles put on it -- I'll report back on how it holds up.
