T2x Backlight question

#1 Post by stevech » Mon Dec 05, 2005 2:08 pm

I have a T2x (2647xxx) with its back light gone. This subject has been discussed here many many times, however, I have some very specific information that may be of interest, so if you are a real TP hardware hack (or have morbid curiosity :) ), read on..

1. The laptop had been working with zero problem, then I started to have periodic back light out problem RIGHT after I tried an Ultrabay battery. The problem has gone from preiodic to almost always no back light now.

2. The laptop runs flawlessly with external monitor.

3. The laptop was tested with a good T2x LCD assembly (back light, cover, inverter, cable and all), back light does NOT come on. I am now reasonably sure that the problem is NOT the usual suspects, aka, inverter, back light, cable..

I am suspecting there may be a power/voltage problem with the MB, however, this is wasy beyond my expertise, if anybody has any ideas, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

check the cable connector, which is right next to the connector of the ultrabay. They go loose sometimes

How do you know the other LCD assembly is good? If you have 2 T20s, wouldn't you have tested the non-working LCD on the working laptop? If you purchased the second lid assembly second hand, that one could have an issue as well.

If the second assembly is definately good and the laptop displays nothing on it, the system board is bad. That would be a very rare problem though, which is why I mentioned the above...

This was done at a local reseller's place that has a number of known good LCD assemblies, I do casually know these people and think they are reliable, and they let me get in there and help me connect at least two of the known good assemblies to verify, but neither worked, and they did not charge me or try to sell me anything else.

BTW, the LCD does have display, just no back light.

Since then, I have brought a bare T23 off EBay and transferred everything over (except memory, of course), and things are working real well, but I am still saving the T22 for further mucking around with and see if I can find out more.

For a while, I was comtemplating sending the machine to you guys and may be you can find something, but bare machines are just way too cheap to make any semi serious repair worth the while.

No, and I may just scrap it. I was really surprised on how much better overall the T23 is(I wrote about it on another thread here), the only reason I am still hanging on is may be if I see a cheap T23 MO, I will swab the thing and see if it makes any difference or, OTH, I may just sell it . :?

I'm not familiar with the T2x series but if it has one I'd try levering the small switch which is depressed when the screen is closed. The switch turns off the backlight and on my R40 was the cause of my screen problems. I needed to lift the switch up with a small screw driver.

Regards

Peter
