R51 and docking station

Recently acquired Thinkpad R51, but eventually found that built-in Radeon 9000 graphics card is not good enough for my need. So I'm looking after buying a docking station. I'm interested in any experience of installing any of ATI FireGL products in docking station. And how all this stuff is supposed to work: if I install additional graphics card in docking station PCI slot, will I be able to see its output on notebook TFT or will I have to buy an external monitor?
