Hello to all in the forum, this is my first post.
I recently bought an R40e on ebay and was doing great until I turned it upside down to remove the battery and look at the numbers to order another one. I replaced it and the thinkpad would not come back on. plug it in and there is no indicator light. when press the power button there is a slight click but nothing happens.
So, I decide to disassemble and check it out. Turns out there is a freaking decessed family of about 5 roaches that lived in this thing NASTY!!!!!! (definitly there when it was purchased) and they were mostly back by where the power cord is plugged in. I removed them and did not see any major damage, but a small black mark on one of the tiny chips. put it back together but the damage had been done.
So Now.... I figure my best optoion is to get an R40e off of ebay (will make sure to disassemble and check it out) and swap my HD. my question is will it boot right up and start like it was my old R40e?
also what is the diffrence between the r40 and the r40e ?
Thank you,
James
Think Pad R40e Hard Drive Swap Question
I used to sell and service home electronics as my business; you wouldn't believe how often roaches were the cause of failure. They love the heat inside such devices. Their excrement is corrosive and conductive. I imagine the problem is even worse today with smaller surface mounted electronic components. I used electronic parts cleaner, or electrical contact cleaner, and a small stiff bristled brush to scrub the circuit boards and components. This sometimes worked if the corrosion hadn't done too much damage.
If you care to try this approach, you can get the cleaner at Radio Shack, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Make sure you get stuff that is not deleterious to plastic. Get a 1/2" wide paint brush and cut the bristles to a length of about 1/2-5/8". Remove the mainboard so you can clean both sides and avoid contacting the case with the cleaner as it might remove the paint or otherwise damage the finish.
If you put your HDD in another machine (assuming Windows operating system) with any difference in hardware or chips it will have to install drivers for the new devices so you will have to have your Windows CD handy, otherwise it should boot just like your old machine.

Generally,
the R40e is a "cheapo" version of R40, it has i.e. no docking possibilities, bluetooth or integrated wifi. Nonetheless, i am very happy with mine. As to your screen question, i am pretty sure that you can change 13,3 - 14" but you will need an appropriate plastic frame to ensure proper fitting.
greetings
