Power drain on Suspend! ??

#1 Post by jsmit86 » Sat Jul 10, 2004 10:58 am

Yesterday I closed my LCD on my T42, assuming it would go into suspend mode.

About 5 Hours later when I tried to resume, I discovered that by battery had drained to 0%!

It has recharged OK, but I am concerned that complete discharging is not good for these.

2 Questions - :?:

1 > Is there any reason the the computer may not have suspended properly? My settings are to suspend on LCD close, and it apprears to be doing so now.

2> I show 42.79 Wh Full Charge Capacity vs. 47.52 Wh Design Capacity with 18 Cycles on the battery. Is this approx normal.

Thanks

I'm not sure why the laptop wouldn't suspend properly, but as to your second question...the answer is yes. It is normal to lose that kind of capacity if the battery is drained to 0%. Li-ion batteries shouldn't be discharged fully on a regular basis.

I always put it into suspend before closing the lid, but both should work. Did you see the "moon" icon lit up on the outside of the lid. My can stay in suspend for over night and loose less than 5% of battery power in 11 hours of sleep. If your went down to 0% it must not have gone into suspend.

i think that any battery will lose this much capacity with this # of cycles.... mine has... can others verify (plz list # cycles and full charge capacity, and battery size [6 or 9 cell] )

Thanks for the replies.

I suspect that my T42 did not actually go into suspend mode.
I had just been in the process of shutting AT&T Global dialer, and my guess is that I may have closed the lid before this was completely shut down. I also suspect the if that app was "hung", it may have interfered with the normal powere management stuff. I never really looked for the moon icon.

Any other posts on battery capacity? (Just to ease my mind)

mine.. 6 cell.... 24 cycles....Full Charge Capacity 42.82....and yes, to protect you from losing data or shutting down a running process unintentionally, it often WON'T go into suspend if something is running.....

Mine has never completely discharged but still says 5 cycles? The lowest it's gone down to was 15% IIRC

Partial cycles get added up to make full cycles.
