Is there an online DOC on removing the relevant screws to get beyond removing the keyboard from a X20? Some stuff seems stuck to get at the bare mainboard & I don't want to break much.

Try downloading the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your X20. These Manuals are a plethora of information.

taking apart & putting back

as a followup, i did take apart my X20 months ago. all small pieces on my workbench, swapped the security chip & works like a charm! Learned a lot & it prolly took me twice as long but my next system upgrade will be that much quicker
