ibe, the problem is XP or W2K, not Linux. Since you get nowhere trying to reload Windows, why haven't you considered trying to load a different Linux distro? You can get distros that are much more users friendly than Red Hat 9.X.
Visit budgetlinuxcds.com and order a few newest releases of user friendly distros for very low cost and free shipping. This group makes professional quality CDs and ships them out a cost. Try Mandriva and Xandros and the newest Ubuntu. I would also try some top live CD versions (they install and run without using your hard drive at all) [censored] Small Linux is very popular.
Want to bet none of these have any problem installing over Redhat 9.5?
Next time, it may pay off big for you if you read up some on an O/S before you install it over your factory installed O/S... Linux users are first to tell you that UNIX and UNIX variants like Linux (and MAC O/S) is quite different from Windows. You want to at least invest an hour reading a Linux beginner's primer, which is a free download on several Linux sites such as Distrowatch.com. Linuxquestions.org is excellent for novices and advance Linux users alike.
Removing your factory installed O/S by installing one you know nothing about, not being able to figure out how to get it to work and then trying to put the new O/S back on, failing and then announcing "linux sucks" is sort of similar to knowing little or nothing about auto mechanics, but still removing, on a whim, your Mustang engine and replacing it with a Toyota Camry engine, failing to get it to work, then failing to get the Mustang engine to install or work, and then announcing to the world that Camry engines suck. Can you see how silly that may SEEM to SOME people?
...Of course, this is merely my humble opinion
