limit hibernation file?

#1 Post by Sternenschwaermer » Sat Dec 10, 2005 6:38 am

Hi together!

Isn't there a chance to limit the size of my hibernation file under Windows 2000 Prof or Windows XP Prof?

I am thinking of buying a further memory module for my Thinkpad T41P, currently with 512 MBs.

When I buy a GByte module, I'll get 1,5 GB RAM, and my hibernation file gets 1,5 GBs, too.
If I buy only 512 MB, and want to get more than 1 GB RAM, I must throw away or sell my 512 MB module, and I think my Thinkpad (2373-GHG) cannot use dual channel...

Is there a toll or a registry setting to limit my hibernation file to 1 GB? or 800 MB?

Greetings...

Thinkpad T41 P
Windows XP Professional
EcomStation 1.2
SUSE Linux Professional 9.2
(was not able to install SUSE 9.1 at my T41P, whatever I tried, only 9.2 worked.

So far as I know, you can limit the size of the paging file, but not the size of the hibernation file. The hibernation file has to be able to write memory to the hard drive just before the system stops. ... JD Hurst

After I upgraded from 512 MB memory to 1 GB memory, I noted that I had lost 2 GB of space on my C drive ; my post on this is somewhere down in this section.

Somebody replied to my post informing me about the hibernation file, which sets aside the amount of RAM you have installed. I don't know about "limiting" the size of the hibernation file, don't think you can do that; but you can go into the settings and disable the hibernation option.
Since I use standby but not hibernation, I disabled the option, and the 1 GB of space that had been reserved for hibernation was again available.

There is no possibility of limiting the size - it would also not make much sense. The hibernation file is there to contain all the Data which is in your Memory. So when you would limit the Size there would be a chance that your Memory which is full at that moment doesn't fit into the Hibernation file.
