Targus Wireless Mouse inop on a new T43
Targus Wireless Mouse inop on a new T43
Dear helpful forum folks,
I ordered a new T43 for a friend. When I installed the Targus PAKP003U wireless mouse yesterday, the cursor moved rapidly to the upper right corner of the screen and oscillated uncontrollably. The Targus wireless mouse/numeric keypad combo was ordered with the system from Lenovo.
I checked the Targus website for updated drivers. None were available. Windows XP automatically installed some sort of USB Human Interface driver for the wireless mouse antenna. Of course I also tried turning the mouse off and on several times. The antenna was clear of any obstructions.
Does anyone have any helpful troubleshooting ideas? Thanks!
P.S. The new T43 looks great! Still has the IBM logo on the palmrest.
Sincerely,
Dave

I don't really know. I have had similar problems on other systems with wired mice and found out that it seems to be a conflict between windows and what ever drivers the mouse required to be installed. For my optical mouse, I didn't install the drivers, and it worked fine; the Forward/Backward Buttons, the Wheel, etc. Does the problem go away once the mouse and antenna are unplugged? Also, what happens if you just plug in the antenna without connecting the mouse?

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Thanks, Chris! Targus does not offer any drivers - no software in the package and no drivers on their website. The problem goes away if the mouse is turned off. No problems when I plug in the antenna, only when the mouse is turned on. I bought it with the system. Maybe Lenovo/IBM tech support will help?

Have you tried booting it up with the mouse on, antenna in, etc.?
Also if you run MAIN.CPL from Start | Run, does the control panel identify it correctly as the Targus wireless mouse (hint: check the HARDWARE tab)? From that tab, BTW, you can see if Windows finds an updated driver online.

I suspect that that mouse would need drivers to work well. The data does get across and into windows, but it might be in an unexpected format so Windows gets confused. I am fairly sure this is a software issue, as I have had the mouse-sticks-to-top-right-corner problem, but not for awhile now. It was a software issue with some program from Windows 95 on my 701c. The only other thing I can think of are the UltraNav Drivers interfering with the Windows recognition process that the mouse designers may have been expecting; although, this *is* from IBM/Lenovo...Hmmmmm.

Thanks everyone! This really is a great forum. I called IBM tech support and they were empathetic and helpful. It finally did start working, but I could not tell you why. We checked the BIOS to ensure that the UltraNav TouchPoint (red button on the keyboard) and TrackPad would be disabled if an external mouse were detected. We tried manually disabling the TouchPoint and TrackPad throught the Control Panel / Mouse / UltraNav software to eliminate potential conflicts. Of course, there you can disable either but not both at the same time. We tried uninstalling the USB "HID-compatible device" (memory is hazy, but that is close) driver under the Hardware Device Manager. The only mouse listed in Hardware Device Manager was the IBM ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device. There are no special Targus drivers available. We tried removing / replacing the batteries in the mouse and booting the system. For no apparent reason, it just started working. The cursor currently works simultaneously with either the wireless mouse or the resident UltraNav pointers (TouchPoint and TrackPad). I had thought that the BIOS settings would disable the resident pointers when the external mouse was in use. Oh, well. At least it is working for my friend to prevent aggravation for her. Hopefully it will be reliable. Thanks again for your support! Have a wonderful holiday season.
