Life after main board repalcement, restore problems

#1 Post by Mumin » Sat Dec 10, 2005 2:38 pm

Hello folks,

Every input will be appreciated. Every direction to the right thread will be apreciated also.

After 5 months my T42 failed. Authorized service( it's on warranty) decided that main board must be replaced.

After I bought it( brand new) I did fresh windows install (xp pro). Im not sure if I wiped out the whole hd( yes I did format everything) =, nevermind , everything worked perfectly fine. After the main board repalcement I cannot install anything. The rescue dvd I recorded dont work ( message saying something about incompatibility with the most recent version of the programm). I cannot perform a fresh windows install. The computer freezes during the instalation. Sometimes it freezes when I'm in the bios. The service guys told me i need to call Ibm and purchase a restore cd. without it I wont be able do anything.

Is there a chance that's something else need to be repaired and the service guy just hadn't done his job particulary well?

Can anyone explain, please, why isn' t it possible to perform clean windows install? I did it in the beginning, why cant I do that once again?

Like I said any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks

You say you can't boot up from your rescue DVD. It is my understanding that when you Create Product Recovery Discs, it takes 6-7 CD's or 1 CD and 1 DVD. If all you have is the one DVD, it makes me think that you Created the Rescue Media instead. The Rescue Media will fit on one CD. Pop the rescue media in another computer without running it. Open My Computer and right click on the DVD drive that has your DVD. Choose properties and see how much Used Space there is. If it is less than 1 GB, then you didn't Create the Product Recovery Discs that you need.

If you are just trying to restore a backup that you made, then try Creating a new Rescue Media or Recovery Media CD (assuming you have the Factory Install now on the hard drive).

For doing a fresh install of Windows, go into the BIOS and disable security for the Predesktop Area. You may have to repartition the hard drive as well.
