Battery discharge while on AC power?

#1 Post by elee102 » Sun Dec 11, 2005 1:53 am

Hello,

I've been having a battery discharging issue with my 2373-H6U and 9 cell Panasonic battery. Even when plugged in I will lose up to 5% of charge capacity in a week.

Any thoughts? Defective battery perhaps? Input is appreciated!

Could be a defective battery, how old is it?

Pretty new, I purchased the thinkpad at the end of September.
So I take this is not normal behavior for thinkpads? I've owned numerous other laptops in the past and never had this issue.

Anytime you plug the Thinkpad in, it should charge; either suspended, hibernated, or just off. Just to me, it sounds defective; you can try testing the Thinkpad out with other Batteries if you have them. The battery has a small chip in it, if that chip and the computer can't communicate, then the computer doesn't charge the battery. It should be either the system or the battery.

does it charge to 100% then after a week, lose 5% of the power? If this is the case, it is perfectly normal because you cannot expect a battery to maintain 100% of the power, even after a week.

Well, that behavior would be somewhat acceptable; but I think that, whilst plugged in, the battery is losing charge(?) while plugged in for one week. Eh, saying it again, doesn't make much sense to me.

Need more coffee. :)

after it finishes charging the battery, it only uses AC and STOPS chariging the battery. Because it stops charing the battery, it will lose charge.

Hmmm, really? I have used my Thinkpad plugged in for several days straight and neither the IBM Power Manger nor NHC detect any chrage loss. It could be the threshold levels in the Power manger where it does, indeed, stop charging the Battery. :)

it happens over an extended period straight. It only counts if you leave ur laptop on ur desk for a long time without ever unplugging it.
