T41p BSOD's after Software Installer update

#1 Post by none » Sun Dec 11, 2005 7:41 pm

Hi everyone,

A few days ago I did an update the software installer and ever since then I've been getting a BSOD non-stop :( The screen reads
"IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS

STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000002, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8581D871)
There is no mention of the device causing this problem on the BSOD.. It appears to be completely random, can appear once a night or 5 times a night and in any application... I've searched this board and noticed a few people had this same exact problem, but the solutions suggested seem to be inconsistant. I was wondering if anyone knows what this actually is?

Here's a few troubleshooting sidenotes...

I don't know exactly what exactly was installed by the Software Instsaller because there were over 10 updates... I know that video drivers were there, System Migration Assistant was there, Scroll Lock Indicator Utility, Access Connections, and a BIOS update. The rest I can't recall :?

Some have suggested it's a common problem with the Intel wireless card. I do not have an Intel wireless card.

Also, this is a T41p with SP1, as per my signature. So the problem is not limited to SP2 and probably no fixed by SP2, which was used by most other people who got this error...

Lastly, I noticed a few people who experienced this had extra Crucial memory in their ThinkPad... I do have a 512MB stick of Micron (aka Crucial) memory myself. But I refuse to believe the actual memory is at fault here! My system was perfectly stable before the last software update, I can't recall a single BSOD in over a year's ownership with the same RAM.

Suggestions please!

AFAIK it's a low level driver causing the problem. Try starting msconfig and selectively choose what gets loaded at bootup to pin down your problem.

You may also see entries in Event Viewer which would give an indication. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

I had the same error when I installed Nero INCD on a desktop PC. If you have DLA, you might try uninstalling that, as it is a simular program to Nero INCD.

Thanks for the suggestions, I looked in the event viewer but didn't really find anything meaningful. At least, no errors that would correspond with the dozen or so BSOD's I've had over the past few days.

I do have DLA installed, never used it and never caused a problem before, but I disabled it.. I reinstalled every IBM driver too, from the software updater. Still getting the dang BSOD though :(

The little progress I did make is finding what exactly was installed a few days ago. I remembered there's an install.log in the drivers dir!

I have pretty much everything that you have except System Migration Assistant and TrackPoint Accessibility Features. I'm not getting any BSOD. I have a T42 with the Intel 2200BG wireless adapter, no bluetooth, the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 display adapter, and Windows XP Pro SP2. Everything is updated to the latest.
