I have a T43p 2668-G2U with ATI Mobility FireGL V3200. The video card is capable of 1440x1050 on the LCD. When I am using an external monitor/projector and the LCD with the resolution set to 1280x1024 @ 60Hz, the external/projector image is correct, but the LCD has a black border (i.e. the entire display is smaller than the LCD).
When no external/projector is attached, the LCD display is correct at either 1280x1024 or 1440x1050.
My video driver version is 8.163.1.1 (12/5/05).
Can anyone help?

Two possible solutions:
1. Try turing on Display Expansion in the BIOS.
Can't remember the exact steps but I think it is Config -> Display -> Expansion after pressing F1 / Access IBM during boot.
2. Might be software drivers too: check that your external display devices are set up to handle this high resolution. On my T40p, Windows always installed 1200*1024 drivers for all external displays by default. I had to go in and update them to the 1600*1200 manually. To update these, go into Device Manager, pick the Display leaf on the tree and update the non-Thinkpad LCD standard display drivers by picking drivers that are equal or better than the resolution you want. Initially, the standard Windows drivers are fine but you may want to update to the manufacturer's drivers for better performance.

Well, I get to answer my own question.JWadle wrote:I have a T43p 2668-G2U with ATI Mobility FireGL V3200. The video card is capable of 1440x1050 on the LCD. The problem was with the setting under Display Properties-Settings-Advanced-ATI Displays. The two icons under Monitor and Panel select which is the "Primary" and which is the "Clone" when both are in use. For some reason, when the (external) Monitor is selected as Primary, the Panel (LCD) display shrinks to show a black border. By switching the Panel (LCD) to Primary, all is well with full screen displays on both units.
I believe that the Presentation Manager setting "Display Device for Movie Playback" (PM Edit-Display) is the same as selecting the device as Primary in the driver config as above.
