Presentation Director messes up desktop icons

#1 Post by superdx » Tue Dec 13, 2005 8:21 pm

Title says it all, I'm using a T43 at 1400x1050 resolution. Whenever I switch to 1024x768 to give a presentation, and then switch back, my desktop icons are all over the place. I had a T42 before and Presentation Director always managed to get my icons back in position. Anyone know of a setting or workaround for this problem?!

Well, answered my own question. Found a utility that saves & restores the state of the desktop icons with just a mouse click. Although I wish that switching resolutions wouldn't mess up my desktop...

I wasn't aware that some version of PD could do this. From my point of view, messed up desktops was ever thus, and one reason why I have stayed at 1024x768. My laptop is constrained thus, my LCD projector is constrained thus and so I keep my desktop at 1024x768 even though it can do more. Thanks for the link. ... JD Hurst

Anytime I lower and then raise Windows screen resolution it will do that... or when I'm reinstalling video drivers.

Of course doesn't happen often, but when it does it is annoying having to rearrange all of the icons

I've noticed when I undock (with my Sony CPD200sf, I only go up to 1280x1024), even restoring my icons with the ATI Tray Tool (www.guru3d.com), the right-most area of the desktop isn't accessible. Icons won't go there. But a reboot resolves it.

I wasn't aware that PD will save icon locations, but I have noticed that if you capture settings to your own schemes, you can easily restore a particular configuration. Nice utility, that.

superdx...Thanks for the link!

My dial-up, [Netscape], rearanges my desktop when loading the Netscape tool bar...[Netscape moves 'my computer' [Among others] off the bottom row [Just above XP tool bar] of my T41...

Have you, [or anyone else], noticed any problems with Icon Restore?
I will be giving it a try...will let you know how it works for me...

Thanks again

superdx,
I would very much like to know your search technique, that is, how you found Icon restore...& possibly a link to the site's home page, as I am unable to 'back into it'.

Thank you,
D

I keep my icons at upper left corner so desktop resizes don't affect their positions. Then again - I have relatively few icons too, usually 5 or so. I do use double height taskbar with one row devoted to quicklaunch where I keep all the shortcuts I need.

Glad my find is benefitting people, I use this utility almost every time my laptop goes into presentation mode.

BTW, I just Google until I find stuff, takes 1-2 hours usually :(
