Recently my T42 (Hydis SXGA+) developed what looked like a clump of dead pixels near the bottom of the screen. The clump was a bit "smudgy", though, and seemed to move a bit over time. I figured out that the cause wasn't dead pixels but some piece of dirt or something blocking the backlight. I tried mashing around on the front of the LCD, but the smudge wouldn't budge.
I was almost resigned to living with the smudge, but I decided to try one more thing. I rapidly and forcefully "drummed" on the lid behind where the smudge was on the LCD. The smudge moved down a few pixels. After some more drumming, the smudge eventually moved off the bottom of the screen. Whew!
I just thought I'd mention it in case someone else's ThinkPad was similarly afflicted.
Spot on LCD -- fixed!
