Have you ever notice any "high pitch" noises from a Thinkpad T ?

Never, my thinkpad is a silent baby.

High Pitch Noise~~~ newborn T43 (2686M7U)

#1 Post by xfn » Wed Dec 14, 2005 3:44 pm

Hi all ~

How many people here have ever heard a T43 making a high-pitch and low/mid volume noise :?:

I received a T43 2686M7U two weeks ago. I had its device drivers updated to the latest. So far everything seems great except this noise issue.

There are at least two ways to easily trigger/check this problem for this model:

A: Working in powered-by-battery mode
1. Unplug AC unit from the system, install battery, and turn on the system
2. Mute the speaker.
3. Connect USB device (USB mouse or jump drive, etc.) to the USB port
4. Let the system idle for 2 – 10 seconds.
* A constant high-pitch noise could be triggered near the upper-left corner of the keyboard area.
* An intermittent lower-pitch-and-lower-volume noise could also be noticed without connecting any USB devices to the system.
* Some posts report a few variances such as intermittent/constant noise when powered by AC or during battery charging.

B: Working in powered-by-AC mode
1. Use AC unit to power up the system
2. Mute the speaker.
3. Set power/battery management scheme to IBM default.
4. Open a web page or a Text file, resize or scroll the application window.
* A lower-volume noise could be triggered by each adjustment made to the window.
* In T43 power management scheme, decreasing CPU setting to “Adaptive” or lower, and setting fan option to “balance all parameters” may remove the sound for this case.

Electromagnetic sound and bat ears?

Similar high pitch noises in Thinkpad with Linux:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... tch_noises

“Problem description
Even though ThinkPads are known as very silent notebooks, they tend to emit different, mostly high pitch noises in certain circumstances. The noises are of low volume and hence not realized by everyone or at least tolerated by most people. However, there are those with "bat like ears" that hear them and might be annoyed by that.”

I agree that most ThinkPads are among the “silent” level, whereas, I also believe whoever tortured by those high pitch noises from some desktop HD/Power/Fan units can still notice this problem without special ears.

I have compared this noise to a few other Laptops; by far, the Thinkpads are the quietest when it comes to noise the chips make. I can hear on during suspend. I am just glad it isn't like some I have heard; on a Compaq laptop across the room, I can hear when it comes on just by the little buzzing noise it makes. Toggling with the Power Schemes usually makes it go away for me; plus, I can barely hear it unless I am doing render processes or something pretty intensive and have cranked up the CPU to Max. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
