vpn issues, can't connect
vpn issues, can't connect
I have a T40 running XP (all patched) and trying to use windows VPN connection to my company. When I try to connect I get "verifying username and password" and than it just hangs (internal wireless and wired).
I recently upgraded my hardrive so it is a fresh install. With the upgrade I also upgraded the drivers and firmware. It worked before the upgrade so I assume I upgraded the wrong drivers/firmware or missed something. Any ideas?

Some questions spring to mind ..
1 : Is it a PPTP or an IPSEC VPN.
2 : If you use VPN(IPSEC) certificates, has your certificate expired .
3 : Have you changed any of your routeurs/Wifi Box's setting recently.
4 : Ask your administrator if he or the company firewall/vpn server has blocked your IP address/machine.
5 : Do a live test whilst talking to the Administrator on the telephone to determine if the company firewall/VPN Server is throwing up any errors/messages.
6 : Has your company or ISP blocked any ports/protocols recently ie IP Protocol GRE, 1701, 1723.

1 : Do all the other standard services work on the Thinkpad ? Ping, Telnet, Tracert etc....
2 : Can you enter the VPN from another location other than at home.
3 : Try swapping the Thinkpad IP address with the other machine at home, just in case the problem is coming from NAT. ( Obviously you have to unplug the other machine or change its address ).
4 : Try resetting your TCP stack with the following command
netsh int ip reset tcpip.txt.
5 : Try reseting the ARP table
arp -d *.
6 : Completely Uninstall any firewall software whilst perfoming these tests.
7 : Do you use NAT on your home router, Is one of your home machines designated as a DMZ.
8 : Does your home router use Port Mapping.
9 : Have you tried reseting your home router ( Make a backup of the router config beforehand.
