240 CPU upgrade

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

240 CPU upgrade

#1 Post by vincentfox » Thu Dec 15, 2005 4:15 pm

Is it possible to upgrade the 240 CPU, or is it a mainboard swapout?

I've got this older ThinkPad 240 with Celeron-300 which is pretty nice but could use a LITTLE more CPU for certain tasks like running Street Atlas 2006.

If I could pickup a mainboard on EBay with a Celeron-400 CPU could I just swap CPU's or am I going to have to do a full transplant?

I think the Celeron 400 was the highest MHz CPU they offered in the 240s. I believe it would be a complete mainboard swap, based on what I saw working with my Cel. 300 machine.. Maybe from the cel 400 you can add in a 500 or something, I am not sure..

EDIT: About you adding a touch screen, it is possible, however it may cause some visibility issues with it, especially if you have the cheaper of the 2 LCDs available (I want to say Type A was the cheaper one).. It is one of those thins that I am sure would be handy though..

The cpu's are soldered on the motherboard

The IBM 240 Serie notebooks were produced max. with Pentium3 600MHz chpu and 1024*768 LCD Resolutio. But these spec. have only for Japanese market produced IBM 240Z notebook.

BUt iBM 240X notebooks have Pentium3 500 mhz cpu's.
