laptop won't turn on anymore

#1 Post by furby » Thu Dec 15, 2005 5:18 pm

I have a IBM thinkpad T22. It will not turn on. All that happens is hard drive light and battery light flashes once whenever I push the power button. The battery is brand new and fully charged. It was working just a few days ago and then just one day some wierd message popped up right before bios, I don't know what it said because it was too fast. But I went into bios and after a few seconds it started beeping and so I shut it down. I haven't been able to turn it on since.Any suggestions?

Try booting off battery power with no AC adapter connected.
Try booting off AC power without the battery installed.
Try booting to Easy Setup with all peripherals removed (HDD, FDD, CD, PC cards etc.).

I don't know what exactly the problem would be... but I can tell you that if it doesn't help to remove everything (hard drive, battery, cd-rom, etc) and it still doesn't boot on ac power, you will probably need a new system board.

Yup, it doesn't sound too good for the mainboard.

My T22 just did this tonight (about 10 minutes ago).
One minute it is on and working fine...... five minutes later it is off and wont' respond.

I tried the power button... with the battery in, the light blinks on for a split second and then goes out, but nothing else happens.

With the battery out, the laptop doesn't respond at all. Sucks. I bought this laptop used 1 year ago.

I guess I have to make a hard choice about whether to order a new board or to save up for a new laptop.

Unplug the ac adapter, take out BOTH batteries and wait a couple hours (better over night). Sometimes it gives you a few more days.

Before replacing the mainboard, try replacing the RAM and processor (if you can borrow somewhere).

Have you tried pressing the power button 10 times in succession, then on the 10th try, hold the power button down for about 10 seconds. Then unlug the machine. Wait a few minutes, and then try to boot normally.

I tried that. (Left her off with no battery or AC power for over a day) She still won't boot.

I'll try some T23 ram on monday evening.

T23 ram may or may not work in a T22, so doing that won't really tell you anything.

Have you tried disconnecting the button battery that keeps the date etc current in the bios?

Question to group: is there a way to clear the CMOS on a T22 or T23? On my desktop PC motherboard, there's a jumper you can short out to clear the CMOS, I've had to do this on a couple of occasions when the thing wasn't booting right.

yeah, unplug the cmos battery for a while then plug it in. the service manual (ibm.com) tells you where and how to do that

i had the same thing happen to me a year ago with my T20
i found out that there is a capacitor in the laptop that was overcharged.
so i left my laptop off for a week and then tried to start it.

and it worked.

Ok. I will pull the CMOS battery later today (before teh superbowl) and then leave it for a week. If I get it to work, then i'm going to sell it off for $300 and use the proceeds to buy myself a later model thinkpad

Well, with all the reading I have done all over and having the same problem you guys are having. Mine just die today same system as yours. I have a T23 and is all pointing to the mainboard. Will talk to friend of mine who works/repair with Thinkpads. Going to ask about the system problem we are having and see if he will agree with me........

Same here.

After I pick up a replacement T23 mobo, I will most likely list the old board here for someone to pick up cheap and play around with. I have heard that certain capacitors can be replaced and get these boards working again, but I am not about to try such a feat. I am nore the "replace the broken part" kind of guy versus the "let's mod it and make it work" kind of guy.

Unless you are Donald Trump and dont mind paying IBM exhorbitant amounts of money for parts and shipping, eBay is the best place for replacement parts... I've bought several T23 bases off eBay for cheap and just swapped out the LCD, keyboard, HD and memory. Makes it a whole lot easier.

I bought a used T22 mobo/proc from someone local on Craigslist for $30 beleive it or not. I can't see spending $100+ on ebay.
