New hard drive for T23

#1 Post by wolverine » Fri Dec 16, 2005 8:52 am

ok... not the christmas gift I was hoping for... What I thought it was Xp unstability and crashing (becoming even stranger after some reinstalls and lots of hours waisted), tured out to be a damaged drive (I run Hitachi drive fitness tool). So... it seems I have to buy a new drive... Any reccomendations from experienced users? I'm in the uk, so american sites it's probably not a good idea. I'm also a student, so expensive sites also not a good idea...

Thanks for any suggestions.

HDD for T23

#2 Post by leegaard » Sat Dec 17, 2005 5:22 pm

I would buy an Hitachi 5400 RPM drive. 40 Gb would be appropriate for such a machine.

No doubt that a 7K60 drive or 7K100 would be neat and nice too.

Sure that your current drive is out of warranty - Probably is, but check warranty info anyway

For the T23, any 2.5 inch drive 12 gig or larger will work, the case will take a 12mm drive but will also take a 9mm drive also. Go to pricewatch to check for pricing, 60gig around $80.00 and 80 gig for $90.00.

Hopefully you requested a set of recovery disks for the T23, it will give you a corporate license to Windows XP, so you will not have any problems with the genuine windows check.

I'm denser than the average bear, but what does this request recovery disks mean? Can you do this is you buy a used laptop off ebay or similar? Like just send in your S/N or something?

I got a Hitachi 7K60 for my T23, the price has recently dropped reasonably. Its idle power consumption is actually lower than the stock drive's.

I've put 8 days and 3 hours on it so far, only got it a few weeks ago. I'm getting my money's worth :D My other 40gb drive (which wasn't stock) had about 130 days on it, I've got it as a spare. There is not much of a temperature incrase, I think it runs about 2 or 3 degrees hotter. In other words, its pretty much what everyone says it is.
IBM T23 [2647-2TU] 1.0Ghz 1.0GB PC133 Hitachi 7K60 + 40GB Travelstar T30 Battery CDRW/DVD IV

Looking for 14" SXGA+, 1.2Ghz PIII, OPTIONAL DRIVE SCREWS & spare T2x series parts at reasonable prices

You can request a set of recovery disks from IBM, but usually this is if your laptop is still under warranty. You can check the status of your warranty if you go to www.pc.ibm.com/support pick the section titled WARRANTY STATUS on the right side of the window. It will tell you if you are covered. If not, you can always try calling IBM service at 1-800-IBM-SERV to see if you can get a set. You may have to pay for it though...
