T21 will not boot into Windows or Linux

#1 Post by jem » Sat Dec 17, 2005 5:25 am

I have a dual boot of Windows XP and Linux installed. If I try to boot into Windows it gets to the XP splash screen with the bar moving back and forth and then after about a minute the bar stops moving and nothing else happens. I can get into safe mode in Windows though.

I then tried booting into Linux. It gets to the main boot up screen, the bar begins moving from left to right. When it gets about quarter way across, it stops too.

I've tested ram with Memtest but after 22 passes it shows no errors. Any other ideas?

Hardware issue.

Take the combo card out , I had the same trouble with a T-21, windoze locked when it detected a defective combo lan/modem. Also, it ran memtest just fine

You may well be correct. I have had some problems connecting to my lan - it would show limited or no connectivity at times.

How does the combo card come out? If it is that is it easy to get a replacement?

Underside: towards the I/O ports theres a plastic cover secured by 1 screw. Remove this cover, observe the combo card. Shiny metal clip secures daughter (combo) card to the system board, slide this clip, card lifts up just like memory does, remove the two wired sockets and lift the card.
Probably cheaper to get a plug-in lan card. I got a $24 wireless lan that plugs intoi the USB port, works well. You also can get plug-in cards ranging from 56k modems to television tuners.

Thank you, that was indeed the problem.

I've now removed the card and will look at possible replacements.
