R& R 3.0 - the backup location can no longer be reached

#1 Post by egibbs » Sat Dec 17, 2005 11:03 am

Been using R&R 3.0 for a while with no problems.

Now for the last two weeks, it fails when backing up saying the backup location can no longer be reached.

I also cannot delete backups from within R & R - same error.

My backup location is a Buffalo Linkstation 160, and it is working just fine - passes diags, can browse it, move files around, etc.

Any ideas?

If you can still see the file or folder in XP (not R&R), try booting up into Safe Mode and use the tip in the following thread to regain permissions on your backups or else to delete them. I'm guessing that maybe the permissions got messed up or lost.

Thanks - I can see the files, and the permissions are set correctly - admin, owner, and everyone has full control, read, write, modify, etc.

I suspect that the problem is that the Linkstation is a Linux based server, and R&R is trying to use some Windows only disk functions to concatenate the incrementals. The problem started when I hit 5 incrementals, which is the limit. Supposedly once you hit 5 it combines the oldest incrementals into 1, and I think that didn't work.

If I look in the RRU backups folder, I have subfolders numbered 1, 3, and 5. I used to have 1,2,3,4, and 5 - so that also leads me to believe that it tried to combine older incrementals and something didn't work. When I view all backups in R&R it shows that I have 5 incrementals and the base, but one of the incrementals shows as 0 bytes. And I can't delete any of them.

All this has once again convinced me that R&R is not trustworthy enough to use as a backup tool. I had come to that conclusion on the previous Rapid Restore software, but R&R had seemed to be much more stable - until this. I'm sure that if I had needed to restore my system from this backup set, I would have been screwed.

So I downloaded the trial version of True Image, and am much happier with it - faster, simpler, better in every way as far as I can see.

I'd like to get back the 500 MB that R&R is taking up, but I want to keep the pre-desktop area. Anybody know if I can uninstall R&R while keeping the pre-desktop (when I load the pre-desktop from the Access IBM key it shows a Rescue and recovery 3.0 logo)?

Well, I uninstalled the previous version of Rescue and Recovery before I installed version 3, and I still have my Predesktop Area intact. So I would assume it would be safe to uninstall Rescue and Recovery. If you lose your Predesktop Area (which I doubt), you can always reinstall Rescue and Recovery to get it back. At least this is what I think.
