Cloning the T43 drive w/ Ghost

#1 Post by ricerocket » Mon Dec 19, 2005 3:04 am

Yeah yeah, I know this has been somewhat discussed to length. But I have a weird issue.

I used Ghost 9.0, which successfully cloned the partition, and the partition boots, but when I get into Windows, I get that blue screen w/ 2 bars and the windows logo on it (after it loads at the proper desktop resolution and whatnot), and then it stalls. So it seems like the MBR is fine (because it boots), so the -ib issue is moot. But is there any reason it can't finish booting while its in Windows? Another weird thing...I can hit the Access IBM button on bootup, and it'll get me to the recovery partition fine.

I also get the 2010 error (cloned onto a 5k80), but that shouldn't be relevant.

More weird things: the recovery partition is listed in Partition Magic as a 4 GB FAT16 partition. FAT16 partitions aren't legally allowed to be over 2 GB. But if you go into Ghost, it says its a FAT32. If I try to create a FAT16 partition in Partition Magic so I can make an exact copy, it yells at me. And if I go into disk management, it says its an EISA Configuration, meaning its an OEM configured drive. Does that mean I can't copy it exactly how it is? It still boots though.... What gives?

Any chance I can do this seamlessly w/ Ghost? I already have it purchased along w/ Partition Magic, and would rather not have to go get Acronis True Image. At that point, I might as well buy a new drive from IBM that's preloaded or something. :D

Thanks!

Oh yeah, the source drive is a HTS541040G9AT00, and the destination is a HTS548080M9AT00...if that makes a difference. Both are parallel ATA, so there shouldn't be issues...

cloning will only work for your data portion of the drive, the recovery section is a problem, even if you managed to get it copied, it will not work correctly (not bootable). The best option is to get your data moved to the larger drive and then call up IBM and request a set of Recovery CDs, if the person asks for a credit card, just hang up and call again to get another person, they should provide this for free.

The weird part is I was able to boot into the recovery partition. I was also able to boot into the Windows partition, but not all the way to my desktop. :o I feel like I'm 99% of the way there...just [censored] Windows is messin' w/ me.

cloning

I am not sure how you clone your HD. I tried to clone mine using desktop computer via using 2.5" IDE interface card connected to 2*2.5" HDs. This way it did not work, it would not boot from the cloned HD.

I read somewhere here that one needs to use the Ultrabay with HD interface. This way you have the original HD in C: and Ultrabay HD in D:. This method was use by another person in this forum with success. I just bought the ultrabay second hand in ebay(cost $30). I will try this method soon.

Let us know. I doubt that the interface has much to do with the cloning of the drive, but its worth a try.

FWIW, I cloned a T23 drive from a 32 GB to 80 GB drive using this exact method (Ghost 9.0 to a USB drive) and it worked seamlessly.

Most cloning software will work when you clone a smaller HD to a larger capcity HD.
I am not sure how you would be able to do the reverse...

I had a similar problem cloning my X32 drive with Norton Ghost 2003 (with the drivebay adapter in my X3 Dock). The cloned drive wouldn't boot. I then did the same procedure with Acronics True Image 9, and it that clone booted perfectly...
Something weird with Norton perhaps?
(I did several bootable clones with my X30/X3 and Norton Ghost 2003 without any problems though...)

I couldn't actually migrate to my new 7200rpm drive from the old 4200rpm with the cloned image because of the Windows Activation I believe -- had to reinstall.

The windows would load, but after I punched in the login and password would shutdown immediately.

I use Win2k3 Server Std Corp, so it could be that the Windows XP is behaving differently but the problem is the same.

Ghost can be tricky. You can definitely clone XP, I did it recently with Ghost 9 from my internal HD to a USB external HD. Ghost 9 used Disk Copy wizard, asked it to create MBR & resize etc. I think from memory I recommend not to format it before copying otherwise you will run into a problem with drive letters which might crash when you try and boot from the new drive. You need to put the new drive in your laptop, you can't boot from USB - it will bluescreen. There is sometimes a problem after you get to the logon screen, no matter what you log in as it will return you back to the logon screen. This is a drive letter issue, you need to open the registry hive from another machine and delete the drive letters and then it works. Do a search on this on Google if you have this issue.
